Summary
In recent years, historians have been very interested in the history of women
in medieval Europe. However, this applies mainly to Western European
historiography, mostly English, German and French. The multitude of
released publications and researched issues relating to medieval women,
presented usually in the form of beautiful editions of books, is truly
impressive. It is proven even by the relatively small selection of publications
that

have been listed in the bibliography.
Some of these books have been translated into Polish. Good examples are
two recently published books: The Four Women of God
(2001)
by Guy
Bechtel (published in Poland as
Cztery kobiety Boga. Ladacznica, czarownica,
święta, głupia gęś)
and Women and Mystical Experience in the Middle Ages
(1996)
by Frances Beer (published in Poland as
Kobiety i doświadczenie
mistyczne w średniowieczu).
As much as this multilingual literature gives us a lot of information
about medieval women in various Western European countries, including
the social and occupational roles that they fulfilled, it has to be said that in
Polish historiography the female issues were never very popular. Although
there is a certain amount of synthetic academic studies, mainly articles, they
are not easily available for the ordinary reader. In
2007,
Janina Gilewska-
-Dubis brought all these sources together in a long article entitled Women
in medieval Poland portrayed in Polish historiography from
mid-içth

until the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries

However,
longer book editions dedicated to the history of women in the medieval
times are in our Polish historiography practically non-existent. Women
from different historical periods have been given most attention by Maria
Bogucka. The Middle Ages were the focus of her research in the book from
2005
entitled
Gorsza płeć. Kobieta w dziejach Europy od antyku po wiek

and in its English version published in
2008
as Women in the history of
Europe: from antiquity till the beginning of the
XXI
century.
It was this lack of longer publications in Polish historiography dedicated
to the history of women in medieval Europe that made me start a research
in order to prepare such a book for the interested readers. The result is
a book that shows only selected aspects of how women functioned in the
Middle Ages and that in no way claims to be a synthetic study. What is
also important, it falls into the category of popular science and is intended
for a general audience.
The book consists of nineteen chapters of different lengths that present
issues relating to various spheres of life of women in medieval times. In the
first chapters, I discussed issues related to the biblical beginning of women
and their role and position within the ancient, early Christian and barbarian
traditions, as well as in the Arab-Islamic world. I also presented the role of
the original sin in the judgment of not only Eve, the first woman created
by God, but all the women in medieval times. The following two chapters
are dedicated to the history of women in the early Middle Ages, in the
context of their participation in power and their role in marriage. Chapter
Five presents examples illustrating the legal position of women. Chapter
Six is dedicated to the praying women, i.e. nuns and their life in a convent,
béguines,
mystics, and female saints. The following two chapters discuss
the issue of married women

I start by presenting the views of medieval
theologians, philosophers and lawyers on marriage, and then I discuss the
married life of women with all its consequences, including adultery, marital
and extramarital sex, contraception and infanticide. The following three
chapters contain lots of interesting information about women belonging
to the noble class, as well as women from towns and the rural areas. I also
included in the book my thoughts on medieval prostitutes, heretics and
witches, Jewish women and literate women. Some attention was also given
to women s sex life, their dress code and their relationship with clergy. The
last chapter is dedicated to female names.
In this book, the reader is able to see many actual, specific women,
mentioned by name and described on the basis of their activities

women
who stood out in religious, intellectual, social, political, and even economic
spheres. However, the book also provides information about many
anonymous women whose activities were known only because they stood
by men, e.g. rulers or husbands. Finally, the book features many times and
in many different social contexts the so-called statistical women. They also
enrich our knowledge about very colourful and interesting, and yet still little
known, lives of women in the Middle Ages.
