Photography has repeatedly engaged
Су
Twombly (b.
1928)
since the days of his studies at Black
Mountain College, but it was not until recent decades, since about
1980,
that this interest solidified into
an independent, artistic concept. On the occasion of the artists eightieth birthday in
2008,
we present
this volume of photographs from the years
19 51
to
2007—
an aesthetic sensation celebrating an exceed¬
ingly vital late work full of surprises and breathtaking beauty.
As withTwombly s other artistic creations, the photographs are documents of a fascinatingly coded,
personal poesy. The artist s ateliers in Lexington and Gaeta, details of his sculptures and paintings,
collectibles and interiors, landscape motifs, seascapes, fruits, and flowers
—
all appear cryptically de-
familiarized in these delicate prints. In matte colors on matte paper, produced using
a dry-prinť
process that lends them a velvety, almost grainy quality, these pictures vaguely evoke the pictorial tra¬
dition
oí
fin de siècle
photography. And yet, in their minimalistic way, they are utterly contemporary,
creating aesthetic visions by the simplest of means
—
as such, they are unmistakable witnesses to
Twombly
s
exuberant artistic creativity, still ever-present in his advanced years.
László
GLOZER
(b. 1936)
is an art historian and critic. With his criticism and exhibition reviews, in
which he has devoted himself to the explication of contemporary art since the late
1950s,
he has become
the indispensable critical authority for the German-speaking art and culture scenes. Glozer, who has also
produced films for television and curated exhibitions, lives in Munich and Hamburg. In
1978,
Schirmer/Mosel published his foundational work on the photography of Wols.
Die
Photographie
hat

(geb. 1928) seit
seiner
Studienzeit am
Black Mountain College
immer weder beschäftigt, aber erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten, seit etwa 1980, verdichtete sich dieses
Interesse zu einem eigenständigen künstlerischen Konzept. Zum 80. Geburtstag des Künstlers, der
2008 gefeiert wird, legen wir diesen Band mit Photographien aus den Jahren 19 51 bis 2007 vor — eine
ästhetische Sensation, die ein überaus vitales »Alterswerk« feiert, das voller Überraschungen und von
atemberaubender Schönheit ist.
Wie seine anderen bildnerischen Werke sind auchTwomblys photographische Arbeiten Dokumente
einer faszinierend verrätselten, persönlichen Poesie. Die eigenen Ateliers in
Lexington
und Gaeta, De¬
tails seiner Skulpturen und Bilder, Sammlungsstücke und Interieurs, Landschaftsmotive, Seestücke,
Früchte und Blumen erscheinen in geheimnisvoller Verfremdung auf diesen delikaten Blättern. Mit
matten Farben auf mattem Papier in einem Dryprint-Verfahren abgezogen, das ihnen eine samtene, fast
körnige Tonigkeit verleiht, erinnern die Bilder vage an die piktorialistische Tradition der
Photographie
des
Fin de siècle.
In ihrer minimalistischen Art jedoch, mit einfachsten Mitteln ästhetische Visionen zu
erzeugen, sind sie ganz und gar zeitgenössisch — und unverkennbar Zeugnisse von Twomblys auch in
hohem Alter noch überbordender künstlerischer Kreativität.
László
glozer (geb. 1936) ist Kunsthistoriker und
-kritiker.
Mit seinen Kritiken und Ausstellungs¬
rezensionen, in denen er sich seit den späten 1950er Jahren der Vermittlung von Gegenwartskunst ver¬
schrieb, wurde er zur unverzichtbaren kritischen Instanz in der deutschsprachigen Kunst- und Kultur¬
szene. Glozer, der auch Filme fürs Fernsehen drehte und selbst Ausstellungen kuratierte, lebt in
München und Hamburg. Bei Schirmer/Mosel erschien 1978 sein grundlegendes Werk über die Photo¬
graphien von Wols.
