This book is an intellectual sequel to the last methodological and theoretical
book on oral history, published five years ago. In our judgment, oral history
worldwide has taken another step forward since that time, and Czech oral history
has capably reflected that trend, even becoming one of the leading forces in
the international community of oral historians represented by the professional
International Oral History Association
(ЮНА).
The authors of this book have endeavoured not only to present a theoretical
and historiographical view of the issues of oral history, but also to summarize
the latest trends in methodology, in procedures for conducting interviews, and
in analysis and subsequent interpretation thereof. Not least, via this medium
they wish to convey to readers their personal experience over the course of many
years of research in the field of modern and contemporary history. The resulting
publication aims to accommodate the needs of professionals in the field as well
as all college and university students of the humanities.
The book was written in the last third of
2011
during the course of innume¬
rable telephone and e-mail discussions between Prague and Aarhus, Denmark.
Attendance by both authors at a meeting of the Oral History Association in
Denver, Colorado (USA) in September
2011
formed the third point in an ima¬
ginary triangle of places of origin. Their stay abroad, and especially a state¬
ment made at the meeting by one of the most respected oral historians, Michael
Frisch,
also inspired the definitive title of this book. In a relatively brief com¬
ment during discussion,
Frisch
very clearly and aptly described the relation¬
ship of oral history to other factors essential to our work, to the big history
of events , and to the issue of memory. His words addressed to a hall packed
with about
300
listeners could be roughly paraphrased as follows. The triangle
can generally be seen as a figure showing three basic resources and approaches,
giving rise to history as a whole and to the historical product. The first point of

is human experience of the past and its telling by laypersons, the
so-called life story or, in a broader sense, memory (individual, collective,
etc.) The second point is the standard history of major events and processes
( event history ); the third point of the imaginary triangle is the joining of the
two approaches: oral history and all that it contributes.
It is precisely oral history, resting on the other two points, that can make
use of integrating the story into a context comprehensible to a wide audience.
Oral history can also be used in teaching at schools on all levels, because it is
able to see history from a comparative perspective
-
e.g. what the experien¬
ces of those who lived through the civil war in the United States, World War II,
the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the events of

September
2001,
and the
recent floods in the Czech Republic have in common. The authors believe that
the scheme of an equilateral triangle is a precise geometric representation of
how oral history and its role can be perceived.
The book itself is divided into eight chapters which deal successively with
matters of terminology, the possibilities and limitations of oral history, and
its definition as a method or discipline, and then compare the development
of oral history in the founding countries (e.g. the United States, the United
Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, and Canada), to which the development of
research in contemporary history is linked similarly. Attention is also given to
some examples of countries where for various reasons oral history has deve¬
loped only after a certain delay (e.g. Finland, Russia, Ukraine, China, Brazil,
and the Czech Republic), tracing common features but also differences in the
overall international context and in relation to the internationalization of the
oral history movement. Also discussed in basic outlines is the relationship of
oral history to the very problematic but absolutely fundamental phenomenon
of memory. A large part of the book consists of a standard methodological
guide to preparation for and execution of interviews, but with broader metho¬
dological implications, including e.g. reflections on the storage and editing of
interviews. Final contemplations are devoted to the starting assumptions, the
possibilities, and above all the meaning of analysis and interpretation of oral-
historical interviews. The last chapter then presents an overview of ethical
principles and legislation pertaining to oral history in the Czech Republic and
elsewhere in the world. In the appendices readers will find, besides samples
of letters of request or proposition, samples of contracts with narrators, and

samples of editing and recording of interviews, also practical advice for descri¬
bing the results of these procedures in the form of oral history.
