The work presents results of the archaeological
excavations in years
2000-2001
on three Neolithic
barrows located within a barrow concentration on
the sacred place Mohyiky in
Haji
Nyżni,
Drohobycz
district, on the right-hand side of the upper Dnister
basin (Map
1).
The research
(cf.
footnotes
1
and
2)
was a part of the multi-disciplinary Polish-Ukrain¬
ian field project), carried out for several years and
until today. In its early stage it was concentrated on
territories between rivers of San and Dnister (En¬
vironment and Man at the Carpathian Foreland in
the upper Dnister Catchment from Neolithic to Ear¬
ly Medieval Period, Polish Academy of Sciences,
Prace Komisji Prehistorii Karpat, III,
edited

2006).
This area
encompasses also Carpathian Uplands, including
the Drohobycz Upland where the locality in ques¬
tion is located (Maps
1
and
2).
On the whole area,
there have been discovered (mainly by the Polish-
-Ukrainian Expedition) a great number of barrows.
Among the biggest is the barrow concentration on
the Drohobycz Upland, near the city of that name
(J. Machnik, D. Pavliv,
V. Petehyryč
2007, 13,
rye.
2).
Related to this concentration are vast barrow
cemeteries (Fig.
1,
Tables
1-7)
forested hills

km
to
E
from Drohobycz, in the village of
Haji
Nyżni
(Map
1).
The biggest of them is located at eastern
borders of the village (Fig.
2,
Photos
1-4).
Excavations of barrows on the Carpathian up¬
lands (also those near Drohobycz) were commenced
towards the end of the 19th century (W. Demetrykie-
wicz
1897).
Most of the examined barrows were
linked with the Corded Ware culture, a few of the
came from later periods. The research was contin¬
ued throughout the 20th century (M. Roska
1919;
M.
Smiszko
1933;

However, methods applied during these ex¬
cavations were much below standards accepted by
today s archaeology.
The barrow cemetery in
Haji
Nyżni,
excavated
by the Polish-Ukrainian Expedition in
2000-2001,
included at the time of its discovery

barrows of
various size (Table
7),
among them
2
big ones and
a number of small and very small mounds (Fig.
2).
Three barrows were excavated
-
one of medium size
(no.
VII)
and two smaller ones
(nos.
VII
and X).
The research was carried out within four quarters
(covering the whole mound and its close vicinity)
by means of thin horizontal exploration layers
(5-10
cm thick). All discovered artifacts were

plotted.
The work was documented by color drawings and
photographs. Moreover, samples for future analyses
of various kinds were being collected.
Barrow
VII
The excavations in
Haji
Nyżni
were opened in
summer
2000
on Barrow
VII
(Fig.
2),
located on
NE
limits of the cemetery and endangered by a nearby
country play ground. The mount was partially dam¬
aged by four shallow dug-in pits of a younger age.
At the moment of the excavation its base diameter
was
20.5-23
m
and the height
1.20
m
(Fig.
3,
Photos
1-8).
The inner structure of the mound was

sic , with several visible layers ( V- d ), including
a layer of original humus ( d ; Fig.
6,
Photos
1-12).
In the upper part of the humus, mainly in the center
of the mound, there were found traces of fires, in
forms of charcoal and lumps of burnt earth, partially
covered by a ring of original yellow sediment exca¬
vated during digging the grave pit (Fig.
4-6,
Photo
13).The latter was dug through the original humus
(about
20
cm thick) and interred into the virgin
ground beneath by about
40
cm. Originally, the pit
was rectangular with rounded corners, with dimen¬
sions about
2.20
by
1.30
m
and orientation NE-SE.
Its even bottom was covered by a thin layer of black
compact soil (Fig.
7, 8,
Photos
14-16).
An obser¬
vation of horizontal lay-outs and cross-sections in¬
dicates that the pit was damaged in its SW part by
a dug-in already before the mound had been erected
(Fig.
7, 8,
Photos
15-19).
During this intrusion into
the already filled pit (possibly but people related to
the defunct for the purpose of recovering an impor¬
tant object), a clay vessel was destroyed (Fig.
8)
and
a flint artifact lost or purposely abandoned (Fig.
9,
Photo
20).
An earth sample collected from the un¬
touched part of the bottom contained a great amount
of phosphorus of organic origin, probably from hu¬
man corps
(cf.
Annex II).
Barrow
VIII
Barrow
VII
was rather small. It was located in
the central part of the cemetery close to relatively
big Barrow V (Fig.
2).
At the beginning of research
the diameter of the mound was
16.70-18.20
m
and its height
0.70
m
(Fig.
10).
Its inner structure
was similar to the structure of the barrow already
described, with a distinctive layer of the original
humus ( d ; Fig.
11, 12;
Photo
27).
In the mound
there were located a few pits of various size and
depth (Fig.
11, 13),
charcoal concentrations and
potsherd (Fig.
11).
Feature
4
located in the middle
of this space (Photo
31)
appeared to be a grave pit
dug through the original humus. It had rectangular
outline with rounded corners and dimensions
1.10
by
0.60
m
and its longer axes was orientated along
Е
-W.
The pit was interred into the virgin soil by
20-25
cm (Fig.
14, 15,
Photos
30-32).
Its even bot¬
tom had in the
E
part a groove-like depression running
along the wall (Fig.
14).
In the SW corner there was
discovered a completely preserved vessel (Fig.
16,
Photos
32-36, 40-42),
while charcoal was spread in
many places, but especially in eastern and southern
parts (Fig.
15).
Particles of ochre were also located
(cf.
Annex II). Earth samples collected from the
grave (also from the vicinity of the vessel contained
a substantial amount of phosphorus (Table
10).
Im¬
mediately above the pit there was observed the pres¬
ence of structure similar to a small mound, with base
diameters of about
2
m
and height of about
0.60
m
(Fig.
11, 12,
Photo
29).
It was built prior to erecting
the whole mound. In and around this diminutive
mound (Fig.
17, 18,
Table
8)
there were numerous
potsherds, mainly fragments of small cups and am¬
phorae, occasionally decorated (Fig.
17).
Other pot¬
sherds (including bigger fragments) were spread in
various parts of the mound (Fig.
18,
Table
8).
They
were accompanied by flint artifacts (Fig.
19-21,
Ta¬
ble
9).
Microscopic analysis of pottery found in the
excavated barrows
(cf.
Annex III) indicates that they
come from at least a few vessels.
A complete vessel found in the grave (Fig.
16,
Photos
41,42) -
a cup decorated with zonal motifs, has
no evident analogies, although individual elements of
its ornamentation can be found in the Corded Ware
culture in many places of its reach
(cf. Loewe
1959,
tabi.

The observed zonal
motif is similar to motifs of the pottery of the Mid¬
dle-Dnepr culture
(И. И. Артеменко
1967).
Despite
lack of radiocarbon dates (the collected samples were
lost in
14С
Laboratory in Kyiv) we can assume that
the barrow in question was erected about the mid 3rd
millennium
ВС.
It is interesting that, apart from lithic
artifacts mainly of the eastern flints (probably from
the Dnister region) and Carpathian cherts, there were
fount

pieces made from rocks from Lesser Poland
-
the chocolate flint and probably of Jurassic flint of
the Cracow variety (Table
11).
Small dimensions of the barrow and its grave
pit, as well as the size of the vessel put into the grave
suggest a burial of a very young person, possible
aged infans II. However, he (perhaps a boy) was
buried with rituals typical for mature person (ochre,
fire, etc.) in the very center of the barrow. It is possi¬
ble that the funeral was accompanied by ceremonies
in which small vessels (corresponding with a young
age of the defunct) were used, broken into pieces
and thrown into the diminutive mound.
Barrow X
This barrow, one of the smallest in the whole
cemetery, was located in its eastern part, close to
bigger Barrow IX (Fig.
2).
Its mound, very much
flattened, had the base diameter
14-16
m
and it was
only
0.40
m
high (Fig.
22,
Photos
49-51).
Beneath
it a few feature were discovered (Fig.
23).
Two of
them
(nos.
4
and
6)
were probably grave pits. The

first of them (no.
4)
was interred into virgin soil by
10
cm. It had even bottom and in dimensions
(1.10
by
0.50
m) and orientation (EEN-WWS) was simi¬
lar to the grave in the already described Barrow
VIII
(Fig.
25,
Photos
51, 52).
Similarly, inside of it
there were traces of ochre
(cf.
Annex II) and its fill
contained a high amount of phosphorus (Table
10).
However, in contrast to Barrow
VIII,
the grave did
not contain any vessel. In the other, much smaller pit
(no.
6;
dimensions
0.65
by
0.40
m) of a slightly oval
outline Fig.
25,
Photos
53,54),
also with even bottom
and interred by
10
cm, a bottom part of a small cup
was found at its longer side (Photos
53, 54,
Fig.
25).
Among other features discovered in the barrow
there were fire places (Fig.
23,
Photos
51, 56),
possi¬
bly linked with some funerary rituals. The purpose of
feature no.

(Fig.
27,
Photos
57, 58)
which has a dif¬
ferent shape than feature previously described (espe¬
cially those recognized as pit graves, i.e.
nos.
4
and
6)
is not clear. It was situated on the original perimeter
of the mound and we cannot exclude its chronologi¬
cal anteriority over the barrow. High amount of phos¬
phorus in its fill
(cf.
Table
10)
might have resulted
from its contamination by an unspecified organic
material. At the border of the mound there was the
only prehistoric artifact (of flint; Fig.
29)
was found.
Moreover, from its upper part there few artifacts from
the modern time were recovered.
The pits interpreted as graves
(nos.
4
and
6)
could have contained only child s bodies (in the
smaller one only of the age
ofinfans
I). A small cup,
the bottom part of which was found in this grave,
represents a form well known in the Corded Ware
culture (J. Machnik, J.
Bagińska,
W.
Koman
2009,
89,
rye.
64: 4).
The excavated barrows on the sacred place
Mohyłky
in
Haji
Nyżni
are only a small fracture of
a large cemetery. Nonetheless, the research brought
remarkable
-
in our opinion
-
results. First of all,
it clarified the contents of small barrows which of¬
ten go together with much bigger ones, especially
on the Carpathian forelands. It appears such small
structures were being built for dead of pre-mature
age, or even for children, who otherwise were bur¬
ied in secondary graves on perimeters of burrows
built for grown-up dead, mainly males (J. Machnik,
J.
Bagińska, W.
Koman
2009).
Were any relations
between persons buried in big barrows and those in¬
terred in small satellite mounds? The answer will
be possible after a thorough examination of whole
complexes of that kind, with application of
DNA
tests and other analyses. Presently we can only say
that funerary practices observed in small barrows
are similar to those registered during excavations of
much bigger mounds. Perhaps they were farewell
feasts with use of small vessels which were broken
at the end and thrown into small mounds sheltering
the burial before the whole barrow was erected? It is
interesting that the place in question has been used
by local cattle boys (Photo
70)
for ceremonial
feast practically up to our times. These ceremonies
may reflect not only the respect to the ancient place
of the eternal rest but also a recollection of old fu¬
nerary rituals
(cf.
Footnote
41).
In Barrow
VII a
case of the secondary opening
of the grave pit (or a part of it) has been registered.
It happed before erecting the mound over the grave
in which a mature person had been buried. This unu¬
sual act was probably
relater
rather to magic ritu¬
als then to the practice of robbing valuable objects
(mainly metals), vary common in later periods.
The second important conclusion deriving from
the research of
e
barrows in
Haji
Nyżni
is related
to the original humus preserved under mounds
and within them. It confirms earlier observations
(J.
Kruk
1980; 1987; 1993;
J.
Kruk,
S. Milisauskas
1999)
that the contemporary landscape, at least in
regions abundant with barrows, was open (deprived
of compact forest cover) and well suited for pastoral
economy. Deforestation of that time was most of¬
ten anthropogenic, caused by long-lasting impacts
of people of the Funnel Beaker culture (burnt-and-
fallow economy, cattle breeding). Their traces have
been registered also in the vicinity of the excavated
barrows (Fig.
30: 1,2).
They are earlier then the ap¬
pearance there at the beginning of the 3rd millennium
ВС
the first groups of the Corded Ware culture who
buried their dead in burrows.
Among important factors facilitating use of
those lands by ancient cattle breeders there was the
abundance of salty springs in the right-hand part of
the upper Dnister basin
(cf.
Annex 1,
155,
Fig.
3),

sential for people, cows and horses
