London was
the shock city of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its rapid
expansion placed it at the heart of British economic, social and cultural life. The
capital of the United Kingdom, London was also the capital of the British Empire.
This is not a book about the success and imperial sway of London, but one that
looks at images of its decline. At the height of its power, writers and politicians
speculated about the nature of its inevitable fall.
Drawing on a wide range of fiction and cultural material, this volume brings
together dark imaginings about the threats to the city. Peasant rebels, anarchists,
Irish dynamitards, Bolsheviks, Fascists, the Sixties counter-culture and Islamist
militants have all been seen as agents of London s disintegration. These images were
articulated in the detective novels, thrillers, sensation fiction and dystopian writings
that constituted the bottom end of the literary market-place.
Analysing fiction in imaginative ways, this book draws on less frequently considered
popular literature about political threats to uncover contemporary fears about
the forces that imperilled the stability of the capital. Through a reading of these
images of disintegration, Antony Taylor reveals a city characterised by social unease,
preoccupied with its own impending malaise, and one in thrall to prophecies of
political destruction.
