Aurel Decei
is one of the most important Romanian
orientalists from the 20th Century. If his destiny had not been
changed by the reorganization of the world after the Second
World War, this science would have had another worldwide
known scholar.
But the generalized conflict and its consequences have
completely changed the course of his life. At that the time,
Decei was a diplomat at the Romanian Consulate in Istanbul
(Turkey) and at the news of the King Michael s abdication on
the

of October
1947
he decided not to return Romania.
So he remainde in Turkey, being one of a great number of
important Romanian personalities who had chosen to lie in
exile, hoping that the political system in Romania would
eventually change. At that time he was already known in both
Turkish and international academical societies as an
outstanding orientalist and in Turkish specialist. His
outstanding knowledge of forein languages his contributions to
the prestigious publications and encyclopaedias have
recommended him as an authority in the field.
As an important figure of the Romanian exile,
Aurel
Decei
was a member of many organizations. For example, he was the
representative of the National Romanian Committee (NRC) in
Turkey
(1948).
He has became a true leader of the Romanian
emigrats, helping thousands of refugees, of persons who had
been expelled or had run away, afraid of the communist
authorities. He was also implicated in the anticommunist fight
through articles, speeches, declarations and informations which
he gave to the NRC, to the Committee for Refugees Assistance
from Turkey, to the International Committee of Churches, to
The Association of the Captive Europeean Nations, to the Free
Europe radio Station, to the newspapers and other publications

from Turkey and abroad. A sophisticated observer of the reality
and a careful political analyst, the historian Decei has done his
duty as a Romanian anticommunist patriot, taking an important
part in sustainingthe confrontations between opposite
ideological systems.
The information that he picked in the discussions with
thousands of people (Romanian and foreign sailors, sportsmen,
scholars, artists, priests and so on), his impressions from
meeting a wide range of diplomats, journalists, politicians and
manufacturers have all been written down, taken over and
transmitted to the Secret Services from eight countries. Free
Europe has invited him many times, and so did America s
Voice , not to talk about the publications from the exile. As
during and after the Second World War,
Istambul
was an
important intelligence and international relations platform, the
informations sent.
All the foreign information sources in the Bosphorus area
have appreciated his services, and especially Intelligence
Service and the CIA, but also the Franch intelligence agency
(which named him
Alfred
),
the Italian intelligence agency,
the Japanese and the Yugoslavian ones (which named him
Erna Milovich ).
Still, Decei s closest relationship was with
the Turkish Secret service, where he had many friends who
appreciated his extraordinary knowledge of the Orient, Turkey
and Balkans.
As he had become the
magna voce
for the Romanian
emigration, the Romanian Secret Service have designated him
as a principal target and done everything to bring him back.
They ve also tried to convince his mother, his family and his
closest friends to determine him to repatriate himself, offering
him a secure future. As they haven t succeeded neither to turn
him into their agent nor to determine him to repatriate himself,
this fearful Organization has then organized Danda s abduetion.

The incredible kidnapping took place on the 20l December
1957
in Berlin. He was brought back in Romania, he was
emprisoned and for two years he was squeezed of all the
information during thousands of hours of interrogation. And
the

sizable volumes kept in the National Council for the
Research of the Archives prove that he knew Secret Police s
plenty. He was sentenced to death, and then his punishment
was switched to

years of hard labor as his guilt was huge .
On the 17th of August
1964
he was reprieved, but they were
still using him for some special assigmments and so he was
hierd at the Central Board of the Secret service s. After that he
worked a few more years at the Nicolae Iorga , Institute of
History, but the scientific contributions to which he should
have been entitled to have never been finished. Especially since
his working instrument
—
his extremely valuable library
—
couldn t be recovered.
The April 24th
1976
was the day when he died, the day
when a remarkable scholar, a very well prepared and capable
orientalist has passed.
Recovering Decei was a great success for the Romanian
secret service and a surprise, a real shock for everyone abroad,
especially in Turkey. The Romanian emigration had then
suffered then a great loss.
All these elements are presented in this book, structured in
six chapters accompanied by annexes. The book tries to restore
a few pages of personal history which belong to the general
recent history, especially to the area of confrontations between
political systems, in which the main character of this book
played an important part.
