The volume includes the letters dated 1904-1905. This period is related in Russian history to the events of Russian-Japanese war and the first Russian Revolution, and for the Museum it was the beginning of severe troubles. The aggressiveness, spread among the working milieu under the influence of revolutionary propaganda, also touched Russian workers at the construction of the Museum. In February 1904 one of dismissed «for bad behavior» marbleworkers in revenge has spoiled marble capital of a semicolumn of a lateral facade just established into place. These capitals were produced as exact copies of capitals of Erehtheion and have been decorated by a thin ornament. To replace the spoiled, it was necessary to extract the marble block of the corresponding sizes in Ural Mountains and to begin the work anew. Besides, it was required to disassemble overlying eaves. At the end of 1904 and the beginning of 1905 the most tragic events for the Museum took place. In the night from 19 for December, 20th, 1904 in one of ground floor halls, where boxes with molds were stored, there was a fire, which has destroyed a considerable part of collected from the beginning of 1 890s. As this premise was inaccessible to strangers, as most plausible reason of misfortune assumed an arson (unfortunately, definitive conclusions of the investigation aren t known to us). The loss, caused to art collections, has been estimated in 40 thousand roubles, the damage, put to a building, has made 16 700 roubles (see the appendix II in the present volume for more details). If in November 1904 in accounting speech Tsvetaev stated hope of museum opening in 1907, after a fire these terms were removed for uncertain time. On February 4, 1905 in the territory of the Kremlin by the terrorist the Chairman of Committee on the Museum establishment, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, have been killed, whose active participation and interest in creation of the Museum had sub¬ stantially defined the public resonance of Tsvetaev s undertaking. Henceforth all affairs of committee up to museum opening should be conducted to its assistant, Nechaev- Maltsov. The new Chairman of Committee, Grand Duke Peter Nikolaevich, will appear only in the end of December 1913 when Tsvetaev and Nechaev-Maltsov any more weren t in live. Fragility of a political situation in Russia has responded also on the contracts made abroad. In June 1905 Tsvetaev, having arrived to Freiburg, has found, that the execution of the order made one year ago, is suspended, as at contractors, because of unsuccessful 455 war for Russia and the begun revolution, there was a doubt in solvency of the cus¬ tomer. Molds from sculptures of the Freiburg cathedral as which Tsvetaev considered very desirable in an exposition of a hall of the Middle Ages, haven t been made for the Museum. The material maintenance of the Museum depending in basic from the donations and never been stable, in 1904 has fallen into decay. The expense on building erection has exceeded by the end of 1904 1 million 54 thousand rbl, without considering expenses on acquisition of monuments of art and books, and all means, collected before, have been settled. Time for creation of museums was adverse - strikes ruined businessmen and it was impossible to find new donators for educational establishments. For the first time there was a question on the further destiny of a Museum under construc¬ tion. Nechaev-Maltsov has rescued the situation, he was not disposed to slow down construction works which should be paid now exclusively from his personal capitals. At his desire in reports of Committee the receipt of these means was specified with the formulation «from the person, wished to remain unknown». At the Russian universities the wave of student s disorders, which have led to timely closing of universities, extended. On January 12,1905, the Moscow University couldn t celebrate the 150-year-old anniversary. The part of teachers of educational institutions has appeared on the party striking. In the letters of Tsvetaev active pro¬ pagandists of revolutionary ideas from among recent graduates of historical and philological faculty of the Moscow university are mentioned, possibly even his for¬ mer listeners. How much close even without suspecting that, the heroes of published correspon¬ dence and those who worked on destruction of an existing public order adjoined in real life, the following testifies. Nechaev-Maltsov, apparently from the correspondence, during the arrivals to Moscow lived in the respectable hotel «Slavjansky bazar» («Slavic market») on Nikolsky street, near to the Kremlin. Some days before his next arrival, 2-4th on February, 1905, in the same hotel the woman terrorist, member of the party of socialists-revolutionaries, prepared bombs for planned attempt at Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich. The strikes which were passing in the country, in the autumn of 1905 have grasped as well, the workers occupied the building of the Museum. Contrary to all adverse tendencies of that time for creation of art establishment, the Museum continued to be under construction, and exhibits arrived to Moscow. The building was visited: on May 20, 1904 by the minister of national education V.G.Glazov, on July 14, the same year by Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, in the end of September, 1905 the Museum was visited by his widow, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fedorovna. For selection of exhibits Tsvetaev during three business trips in 1904-1905 has visited museums, cathedrals and mold workshops in 27 cities and among them: Berlin, Aachen, Paris, Amiens, Chartres, Bourges, Dijon, Rheims, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Bamberg, Naumburg, Munich, Dresden, Leipzig, Hildesheim, 456 Freiberg, Cologne, Freiburg, London, Basel, Lausanne, Geneva, Vienna, Ulm, Augsburg. If since 1890s the Museum collection was replenished with molds from an antique sculpture, in 1904—1905 the basic quantity of new receipts was made by monuments of an epoch of the Italian Renaissance, the molds of which have been ordered by Tsvetaev in 1902-1903. At this particular time basically the structure of an exposi¬ tion of two halls from which one has been devoted to the art of 15th, and another - of 16th centuries, mainly - to creativity Michelangelo has been generated. Works of the Italian masters of the previous period, intending for a hall of the Middle Ages, also have been presented in receipts of 1904. Overall objective of business trips of Tsvetaev during 1904-1905 was studying on a place and selection for copying of monuments of the Romance and Gothic periods in the countries of Northern Europe. The section of an exposition devoted to the European Middle Ages planned still in 1896 (see the conditions of architectural competition in the Appendix to v.l), now has been added by monuments of ancient Christian arts of 5th-6th centuries from Ravenna and covered the period about thousand years. It gave esthetic impressions, absolutely new to the Russian spectators. The ancient art was in general known to a cultural part of the future visitors of the Museum as it, perhaps in the most short form, was included into the curriculums of grammar schools and was studied in higher educational institutions at humanitarian faculties, art advantages of medieval art also at the beginning of the 20th century were clear in Russia not to everybody. The for¬ mation of this part of a museum collection got therefore especially important edu¬ cational value. Getting acquainted with the art of the North European countries, Tsvetaev from the Middle Ages has passed to monuments of 15th—16th centuries, which can be carried to art of Northern Renaissance. Further it has been decided to place this sec¬ tion, absolutely new in the program of the Museum exposition, in a hall adjoining the Christian Courtyard where earlier it was intended to arrange the Antiquarium. The acquisition of the section of ancient Forward Asia, to which one hall in an expo¬ sition of the Moscow Museum was intended, was another problem. Products for this hall stole up in the British museum - bas-reliefs of a palace of king Ashurnasirpal II (9th century ВС), in Louvre - winged bulls, Hammurabi stele. On antique section Tsvetaev in 1904-1905 has ordered only separate monu¬ ments necessary for completeness of a collection, among them from the British museum for the period of high classics - sculptures from Apollo s temple in Phigalia, and also the products of the Greek sculptors created in the territory of Asia Minor in 5th - 4th centuries ВС: lycian sculptures, the main sculptures of the mausoleum of Galikarnassus and an architectural fragment of a temple in Ephesus - the base of a column decorated with relief images. Reception of an expensive mold from a southeast corner of Parthenon from the Parisian School of fine arts was a subject of especial care of Tsvetaev. 457 The mold represented the scientific reconstruction of a part of Parthenon in its real scale with restoration of the destroyed parts of a monument. It was important for Tsvetaev for two reasons: first, it gave a representation about the true propor¬ tions of this world famous construction. Secondly, the museum on the educational appointment should acquaint the spectator with the basic architectural warrants, and it was more convenient to present them on the most known, classical samples. The Ionic warrant was shown in architecture of the Museum: at designing of an exter¬ nal colonnade of the Museum for the sample where are taken in the increased scale the proportions of columns of east portico of Erehtheion, drawing of capitals as it was specified above, in accuracy repeated an ancient monument. Corinthian warrant has been presented by a mold of a monument of Lysicrates. The corner of Parthenon was considered as the best example of the Doric warrant. Such a large mold has demanded deepening of a floor of the Greek Courtyard to ground floor level, in this connection the hall original project has undergone basic processing. The court yard has received the three-level survey terraces connected by ladders. Such decision, having increased the general cubic capacity of a hall, has given to its shape an originality and has allowed to avoid impression of narrowness of space at installation in it of molds of large architectural fragments. While Tsvetaev made orders, trying to imagine placing of this or that subject in the future exposition of the Museum, from Moscow came disturbing messages. I.VDmitriev, a clerk in the Rumjantsevsky museum, simultaneously conducting office-work of Committee on the establishing the Museum of fine arts, accurately informed Tsvetaev about all the details of museum life. On July 4, 1905, he wrote: «The people from us in Moscow is strongly taken on war. A companion who only wanted to move to me on a summer residence, at night before the departure to me was taken on active duty. My clerk [Matveev - Сотр.] which copied your letters in the book, also is taken on war three days ago . Everywhere there is a crying. Crowds of reserve soldiers which are sent in different cities move all night long. In the Rumjantsevsky museum about 15 persons are taken. Their families and the wives are left in the apartments [state apartments of a museum - Pubi.]. Crying is heard at night. All stations, when it becomes dark, are overflowed with going reserve militaries, and there is everywhere an horrible cry». On July 28, 1905, Dmitriev informed on placing of boxes with the plasters arriv¬ ing in the Museum from abroad: «I yet didn t begin to replace the boxes, first, because the pantry is yet not ready, and secondly, I wait for the moment when the people will be more silent. To take any passers-by I now I am afraid, for at each of them knifes are behind a top and are malicious before that the slightest word which they dislike - and a knife in a stomach. Bad time, very bad. Something will tell to us the session in America concerning peace [it is a question of conclusion of peace with Japan- Pubi.]. But in advance it is felt that if the peace will be made on bad soil for Russia, slaugh¬ ter will go, and if won t conclude the peace, too it will be not easier». 458 By the end of 1905 the Museum building has been erected, walls are revetted by marble, and in a back part are plastered; windows are glazed. The museum at last has received the main facade with its marble colonnades and two sculptural friezes. In halls the considerable volume of painting and decorating was coming still. In parallel the building was filled with exhibits, while stored in boxes. In April 1904 from a close premise in the University building the collection of antique vases and library of the Office of fine arts have been transferred and placed in the so-called apartment of the keeper which are in back, intending for residing of the personnel of a part of the Museum. Here the possibility of carrying out of the studies with students on Office materials has been provided - in university reports since 1904 it was specified that the Office has been opened Daily from 10 o clock in the morning to 4 o clock in the afternoon also that it is located in a new building of the Museum. Thus the Museum, even long before opening has started to carry out the functions of scientifically- educational establishment.
