The authors begin their comprehensive survey of the development of the language from its Indo-European origins through its major periods: Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Modern English. They conclude the analysis by examining the continuing evolution of the language --- with discussions of the effects of new media, computer-mediated communications, and text messaging --- as well as the national dialects of Present-Day English, with particular attention to the regional dialects of Canada and the United States. New! A quick reference guide makes it easy for students to find summaries of the periods of English, IPA symbols used in the text, vowels and consonants of each period, and changes in morphology and syntax.
