and in the Seventeenth Century
Abstract
In recent years, women s issues have become a subject of research of many historians.

woman has begun to be analysed not only in terms of demography, procreation, family, but
also of her position within the society,

present book attempts to determine the place of
women in the community of a small town of
Creat
Poland in the second half of the 16th and
in the
1
7 h century. It was a time of both prosperity of the towns at the end of the
1
6th and in
the first half of the
1
7 11 century, and of their decline in the end of the
1
7lh century. The ana¬
lysed issues belong in their majority to the so-called long-lasting phenomena and their concern
family structure, urban economy, culture, customs and traditions.
The present research focuses on female inhabitants of several selected small towns of Great
Poland: Bnin,
Borek,
Dolsk,
Gostyń, Kleczew, Kłeck, Pleszew, Pobied/.iska, Poniec, Pyzdry,
Rad/.iejów, Rydzyna, Słupca, Sulmierzyce, Wolsztyn.
The analysed towns belonged to the cat¬
egory of small towns, in the literature on the subject classified as 111 and IV category, and had
about from
400
to
2000
inhabitants.

position of a woman in old-Polish society was influenced by law, wealth and custom,
but also, as we should not forget, by her individual predispositions. Women were discriminated
against in the legal norms at that time. According to municipal law, women were not rightful
members of the society. The lack of legal capacity to perform legal acts, property and heritance
restrictions, difficulties in working in craft jobs that often were as much as prohibited, the neces¬
sity to depend on male caregivers, ban on performing public functions, and even the lack of
freedom to choose a spouse and dependence upon him in many legal and financial matters, all
these put women on the margin of public life. According to Maria Bogucka, women were the
most silent part of society.
In the reality, however, the barriers put up against women, both legal and customary, were
possible to be overcome. In small provincial towns of Great Poland we find women vindicating
their rights in courts. They appeared as witnesses, sued for debts or owed properties, and also
for legal (as opposed to the actual one) parental custody of their children and their estate, despite
the fact that according to the law it was a man who was the custodial parent of a minor child.

area where townswomen were left a fairly large freedom of action was economy. In
Great Poland we find women working in retail trade: in taverns, stalls and booths; they also
worked as peddlers,
ľhey
could also be a moneylender. We find women in handicraft workshops,
both as helpers and owners, they run various workshops, such as furrieries, shoemakers , tailors ,
producing cart wheels or pottery. Working in professions offered to women a certain extent of
freedom; they were able to generate their own income, often to their own use.
Women actively participated in the life of their own town,
ľhey
were familiar with prob¬
lems of the poor and the needy,
ľhey
supported religious and welfare institutions. At times,
they allocated a bigger part of their wealth for religious purposes.

There were also among the female inhabitants of small towns women brought to court, both
for petty offences, such as rows, brawls, or slander, and much more serious crimes, as theft,
adultery, infanticide, witchcraft.

for this reason they were perceived mainly as maidens

daughters, wives

mothers, widows.
Each phase was characterised by different rights and duties.

daughter had to be obedient to
her parents, lead a chaste life and help the family. It was a wife who had the most duties to
perform. On the one hand she had to be faithful and obedient spouse and a good mother, while
on the other she had to take care of the household, and help her husband in his workshop. If
needs be, she had to help earn a living. The greatest measure of independence was enjoyed by
widows, who were allowed to decide on matters concerning themselves, such as a new husband,
property allocation or type of business pursued.
