(Summary)
he paper consists of two parts. In the first part is presented a general descrip-

tion
of the development of analytical chemistry in the mentioned period in
Poland. The second part, much more voluminous, describes the achievements of
individual institutions, where works over analytical chemistry were conducted.
The first described period approximately extending roughly to the middle of
the fifties of the 20th century, was basically devoted to reconstruction of the old
prewar research structure, which in fact was in the process of forming. During
that period only few works were published which included elements of scientif¬
ic novelty in analytical chemistry. Also an inter-institutional cooperation began
for the exchange of experience and the professional education.
The next period, lasting for about fifteen years till the end of the sixties, was
characteristic for final formation of some organizational structures that enabled
analysts more effective education, which was to be of needed quality. As a result,
more papers on analytical chemistry were published. They presented several sig¬
nificant elements of scientific novelty. That period could be characterized with
a decreasing role of chemical procedures and replacing them with physico-
chemical techniques. In the field of inorganic analysis a broad interest for spec-
trophotometric methods of analysis reflects in studying organic complexing

reagents and equilibria in complicated chemical media. Such effects were pre¬
sented by numerous inland laboratories, but, undoubtedly, the Warsaw
Polytechnic can be considered as a leading centre.
Several interesting achievements were obtained and recorded in the field of
emission spectrometry
-
a technique, which is particularly important for trace
analysis. It was mainly connected with the interest in analysis of nuclear mate¬
rials as well as of many industrial products. Many papers were published by the
Institute of Nuclear Research in Warsaw, and the Institute of Industrial Che¬
mistry, also in Warsaw.
The main centre, in which electroanalytical methods were developed, was
established at the Warsaw University, and slightly later also in the Academy of
Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow.
The growing need of modern methods for organic analytical chemistry in
general brought about possibilities due to the development of chromatography,
which contributed to the leading position of academic institutions in Lublin
(M.Curie-Skłodowska
University and Medical Academy). Independently of the
fundamental research, many laboratories have conducted applied studies, parti¬
cularly in chemical, metallurgical and other industries, as well as in pharmaceu¬
tical and medical institutions.
The contacts and cooperation among scientists interested in analytical chem¬
istry led to an organization of a number of scientific meetings of Polish workers,
and even with an increasing participation of foreign scientists (Table
1; 2).
An
important role in the development of analytical chemistry was played by Com¬
mission (and later Committee) on Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy
of Sciences, established in
1956.
In the same year a specialized journal
Chemia
Analityczna
(Chem.
Anal.) was started. Till the seventies the magazine was the
main platform for publishing Polish research papers on analytical chemistry. The
limited access for Polish students and scholars to Western monographs resulted
in these years in preparation of numerous new books (Table
3)
on modern ana¬
lytical techniques.
It should be mentioned that in the years
1968-1969
the old structure of uni¬
versity chairs was closed down, and instead university institutes were estab¬
lished. In the field of analytical chemistry it resulted in forming independent
departments of analytical chemistry. On the other hand, this fact weakened the
cooperation of analysts with more theoretical aspects of chemistry. One can also
add that at that time Polish analytical chemistry gained a relatively high position
in international science.
The next period, including the eighties and the nineties, was characterized by
more intensive contacts with research centres abroad. It was connected with
a greater participation in international conferences and possibilities of research
stays in foreign centres. In consequence, the gained experience had significant-

ly influenced the scientific standard of home institutions. During this period,
also for political reasons, a great many of scientific workers left Poland. Some
of them had also later contributed to the development of science in Poland.
During the last period, from the nineties till
2005,
the increased, numerous
and direct international relations, the possibility of improving on laboratory
equipment and wider access to foreign scientific literature resulted in many valu¬
able research papers on analytical chemistry. Some of them were devoted to fun¬
damental research. However, most of them were directly connected with the
development of new methods of analysis connected with various fields of human
activity. A number of laboratories directed their interest to the study of proce¬
dures useful for environmental research. According to the world standards, more
studies were devoted to direct application of analytical methods in biology and
medicine. Interesting results were obtained in the field of archeometry, crimi-
nalistic and forensic research. The rapid development was also possible due to
better availability of modern instrumentation, which was often supplied with
ready procedures for solving a particular problem.
The second part of the paper presents a review of achievements of particular
centres indicating their research activity in the field of analytical chemistry. The
centres are presented alphabetically (according to their Polish names) in the fol¬
lowing groups: universities, technical universities (polytechnics), medical insti¬
tutions and research institutes. Apart from the short general description, their
activity is exemplified by the published papers that are given with full titles. The
choice of such publications is, of course, arbitral, but the author s intention was
to cite papers showing the principal research activities. In the selection of pub¬
lications, review papers were omitted, as in some cases they might not be repre¬
sentative enough for the main research field. Also articles of Polish analysts
written in laboratories abroad were not indicated in spite of their high scientific
value.
