Summary
Population Structure of Slovakia
in
1919 -1940
Summary
Generally speaking, population of any given geographical area is
a fundamentally heterogeneous system marked by great structural diversity.
Population structure is an important subject of study in a number of scientific
disciplines. The one with the broadest scope is population studies which exam¬
ines structural indicators not only on the most basic levels, such as reproduc¬
tion itself, but also their broad economic and social impact. Such data is by its
nature static, yet it represents dynamic processes which are subject to signifi¬
cant fluctuations based on demographic, economic and social dynamics. Popu¬
lation structure thus represents a result of past developments with significant
impact on the present and the future.
Structural indicators which are used to analyze population structure can
be divided into three basic groups: biological, economic and cultural. Based on
available date for the period between
1919
and
1940,
we attempted to evalu¬
ate the population structure of Slovakia both on the national level, as well as
regionally.
As shown by data obtained in regular and irregular censuses and other
population counts, population distribution between WWI and WWII in Slova¬
kia was highly irregular. Average population density at
61-68
people per
1
km
was the lowest among all the constituent parts of Czechoslovakia second only
to Carpathian
Ruthenia,
the least populated area. As for individual regions,
South-Western agricultural regions and areas around larger cities traditionally
maintained high population density while upland regions in Central, Northern
and North-Eastern Slovakia remained the most sparsely populated areas.
The age-sex structure is the most important population characteristic and
the most crucial piece of data in evaluating the present state and future de¬
velopment of demographic reproduction. The sex distribution is influenced by
several factors. Firstly, there is the undeniable biological fact that the male-
female ratio among newborns is skewered towards males. In humans, this has
a significant impact especially on younger generations. Secondly, mortality
ratios have played an important role in the distribution of sexes in Slovakia.
For a long time, mortality among Slovak women of productive age was much

higher than that of men in the same age group. Improvements in health care
lead to gradual leveling of mortality rates until this disparity was all but elimi¬
nated at the end of the period in question. Important social and political
events of that period, such as WWI and large scale emigration prior to the
formation of Czechoslovakia also contributed significantly to sex distribution
disparities.
Turning to population structure based on age distribution, WWI stands
out as the major influence and the ultimate cause of a sharp cut in the age
pyramid resulting from both a decrease in births and a conscious reduction in
reproduction activity. Additionally, the
1930s
global economic crisis also nega¬
tively impacted the birth rate, as did high levels of mortality. High neonatal
and infant mortality especially had a profound effect on median age, although
an improvement in both these indicators can be clearly observed towards the
end of the period. The cumulative effects of all these characteristics is evident
in the composition of the age pyramid, where the most weight is carried by
the pre-productive age group and the youngest strata of the productive popu¬
lation with post-productive population constituting a small minority. Thus in
the period between the two world wars, Slovakia was among the youngest
populations in Europe. At the regional level, the oldest population can be
found in the counties of Southern Slovakia. Economically disadvantaged re¬
gions like
Kysuce
and
Považie
(especially its central part), but also northern
parts of the former comitatus of
Nitra
and most counties in Central Slovakia,
are noted for their exceptionally young population.
Family structure is another significant indicator used in the analysis of
population structure. The period between
1919
and
1940
is marked by signifi¬
cant differences in mortality and nuptiality between single, widowed, divorced
or separated and married persons. The study of marital status thus becomes
an integral part of research into any demographic process. Considering the age
distribution of Slovak population in the period in question, it comes as no
surprise that single persons constitute a majority for most of that period.
However, when taking into account the effect of age on nuptiality and family
planning, it becomes evident that the ratio of single persons was continually
and rapidly decreasing as a result of early and high nuptiality. On the other
hand, the aforementioned discrepancy in mortality ratios between the sexes
played a significant role and a slight increase in the number of widowed per¬
sons can be observed throughout the period.
While gathering data on family structure and marital status, the
1930
cen¬
sus counted all orphans younger than
14.
The results point to a clear differen-

the direction from West to East. The lowest ration of orphans and
semi-orphans was recorded in the Czech lands, followed by Moravia, Silesia
and Slovakia with Carpathian
Ruthenia
recording the highest number of or¬
phaned children. This phenomenon shows a strong correlation with mortality
rates in the respective constituent parts of Czechoslovakia
-
mortality rates
increased the farther East one went, which most likely accounts for the high
ratio of orphans among children in Slovakia and Carpathian
Ruthenia.
The
1921
and
1930
censuses also attempted to map literacy levels. The
need to gather literacy data arose as a result of neglect public education suf¬
fered in the years before the formation of Czechoslovakia. The new govern¬
ment was painfully aware of this public policy problem and attempted to rec¬
tify it, especially in Slovakia and Carpathian
Ruthenia.
Discrepancies in literacy
level appear much more pronounced on the regional level. It is interesting to
note that even here, one can observe a strong West to East as well as slightly
less conspicuous South to North gradient.
The complicated ethnic and confessional make up of Slovakia was a result
of centuries of population development and final formation of a stable settle¬
ment structure which took place just before the studied period. For most the
first half of the 20th century, Slovakia remained a multiethnic country as it had
been for most of its history. After the formation of the Czechoslovak Republic
and especially once the final borders of Slovakia were drawn, ethnicity as a
concept underwent a major overhaul
-
self-reported identification with a
particular ethnic group became the main criterion for determining a person s
ethnic identity. The basic ethnic mosaic remained virtually untouched: ethni¬
cally Slovak population (reported as Czechoslovak ) was concentrated in Cen¬
tral and Northern parts of Western and Central Slovakia and in the central
parts of Eastern Slovakia. North-Eastern Slovakia was home to a significant
Ruthenian
/
Russian minority; Southern Slovakia, especially counties sharing a
border with Hungary in South-Western Slovakia and
Žitný ostrov,
were inhab¬
ited by ethnic Magyars. The vast majority of the German population of Slova¬
kia could be found in one of the three historical German enclaves
-
Bratislava,
Northern part of the former comitatus of
Nitra
and
Spiš.
And finally, the Jew¬
ish population was concentrated in and around cities and towns of Eastern
Slovakia, but it is notable that small Jewish enclaves can be found in villages all
over Eastern parts of Slovakia.
In sectarian terms, Slovakia has always been a predominantly Roman
Catholic country and remained so during the period in question. The
Uniat
-

-
church had a strong position among the

population while the Russian Orthodox church had only recently begun to gain
ground. The
protestant
confession was represented by two denominations
-
the Slovak Lutheran Church and the Reformed
(Calvinist
or Helvetian )
Church. Traditional Lutheran strongholds include the regions around
Myjava
and Martin and most of Central Slovakia, while most of the Reformed Church
congregations can be found among Slovakia s Magyar population, i.e. in the
Southern regions. The Jewish
-
or Israelite
-
faith was also well represented,
especially in the cities. Curiously enough, when contrasting data on ethnicity
and data on confession, it becomes apparent that only half of those who con¬
sidered themselves members of the Jewish religious community viewed them¬
selves as members of the Jewish nation.
The WWII-time Slovak Republic is a unique and controversial chapter in
the history of Slovakia. Territorial changes of
1938
and
1939
when large por¬
tions of Southern, Northern and Eastern Slovakia were ceded to Hungary and
Poland, were immediately followed by significant changes in the ethnic and
confessional structure of the country. Since following the First Vienna Award,
most of the Magyar population inhabited areas now under Hungarian control,
ethnic Germans now became the largest minority and consequently, the
membership in the Reformed Church dropped sharply. State-sponsored perse¬
cution of people of Israelite faith and Gypsies (i.e. Roma) during World War II
had a significant impact on census data gathering. Members of both groups
were assigned and forced to accept their status, thus any data gathered during
that period becomes inherently unreliable and cannot offer any insight into
the ethnic and religious composition of wartime Slovakia.
The economic activity of Slovakia s population underlines the
predominantly agricultural nature of Slovakia s economy throughout most of
her history. General population s dependence on agriculture under
environmentally and technically difficult conditions resulted in permanent
social tension, especially in the countryside. Agricultural overpopulation be¬
came an issue in 19th century and not even the land reform initiated immedi¬
ately after the formation of Czechoslovakia could do much to solve this prob¬
lem. As a consequence, the socioeconomic structure of Slovakia consisted
largely of individual tillers and farmers working on small tracts of land. Entire
families were involved in working the land, thus most of the population made
their living from the land, either as owner farmers, i.e. heads of household, or
their family members who helped out. Indirectly involved in the agriculture
were also day or migrant laborers, a group of persons who could only find

Summary
occasional or seasonal work, but were unemployed for the rest of the year and
thus found themselves at the very bottom of the socioeconomic ladder.
In the period in question, industry and manufacturing trade were still in
their diapers and expanded only very slowly. Compared to Western European
countries, pre-WWII Slovakia was barely industrialized and the population just
started to give up the traditional farming lifestyle in favor of employment in
larger manufacturing facilities or engaging in manufacturing trade for them¬
selves. The
1930s
economic crisis with its negative impact on global economy
was a significant setback for the industrial development of Slovakia. The larg¬
est group engaged in industry and manufacturing were workers employed by
manufacturing plants. However, typically Slovak self-employed tradesmen and
small businesses remained an important segment of country s economy, occa¬
sionally providing employment not only to the tradesmen themselves, but also
to their family members. Of the service sectors of Slovak economy (commerce,
financial services, other services), the transport sector provided the most
employment opportunities, especially in the early years of the period. Public
and civil service, however, soon became the fastest growing employer with a
large number of administrators and other officials coming in to create and
maintain new government structures, but also with a great number of teach¬
ers who were involved in the creation of new system of educational institu¬
tions.
