| adam_text | SUMMARY
Right after the establishment of Czechoslovakia, it was evident that
foreign trade would play an important role in the economy of the
new state. Several factors
-
for example actual production capacity
of Czechoslovak enterprises and a relatively narrow domestic market
that was much smaller than the Austro-Hungarian one
-
compelled
Czechoslovak producers to look for satisfactory foreign sales
opportunities. During the inter-war period, Czechoslovak export to
China represented a very specific section of the Czechoslovak foreign
trade. China did not rank among the most significant importers
of Czechoslovak goods due to several obvious obstacles which
often complicated a potentially greater expansion of Czechoslovak
manufactures to the Chinese market. A long-term development of
the Sino-Czechoslovak trade was hindered, to some extent, by an
unstable political and military situation in China, big geographical
distance between the two countries and lengthy negotiations between
Czechoslovakia and China concerning and agreement which would
provide a suitable platform for Czechoslovak-Chinese business.
Despite these problems, China became a significant customer
for some important Czechoslovak companies during the inter-
war period. China became a more and more important market
for Czechoslovak producers and its share in the overall inter-war
Czechoslovak export gradually grew. However, the most important
aspect of the record-breaking increase of Czechoslovak export to
China in the second half of the
1930s
was the controversial arms trade
accentuated by China s growing military conflicts at the expense of
non-military commodities. In inter-war Czechoslovakia, export to
China was dominated by two producers:
Škodovy závody (Škoda
Works) and
Zbrojovka
Brno (Czechoslovak Arms Factory of Brno).
The exports of these two companies showed affinities and differences
as well. Both enterprises developed their first contacts to Northern
China and their Chinese business passed through similar cycles. In
some cases there were significant differences between the two firms,
mainly in the commodity structure.
Zbrojovka
Brno was dominantly
exporting the arms while
Škoda
Works, unsuccessful in this sort of
export, had to rely on non-military commodities.

The Sino-Czechoslovak trade showed only a limited volume
during the first years after the Second World War. The economic
relations between Czechoslovakia and China entered the new
phase of the great expansion after the establishment of communist
regimes in both countries. The narrow spectrum of communist
China s potential trade partners substantially affected the volume
of Sino-Czechoslovak trade for a long time. Specially in the
1950s,
the Czechoslovak firms stayed in favourable position penetrating
to Chinese market more easily than companies from democratic
countries. The boom in the mutual trade was suddenly terminated
by the
Sino-Soviet
split at the beginning of the
1960s.
Comparing
to the present situation, the conditions of trade between communist
Czechoslovakia and the People s Republic of China (PRC) were
really anomalous. Before
1989
(particularly before
1979),
the
international politics and political ideology influenced the mutual
trade
-
in both positive and negative ways
-
to a much larger extent
than today. Moreover, some specific instruments making the mutual
trade more advantageous (for both states) were used before the fall
of communist regime in Czechoslovakia in
1989.
Particularly the
clearing mechanism combined with barter played an important role
in the mutual trade. Before the liquidation of clearing mechanism,
the PRC considered the trade with Czechoslovakia as a specific trade
that did not require rare convertible (hard) currencies . After
1989,
the Czechoslovak government speedily rejected communist model
of foreign trade. The new model corresponded to the conditions of
the market economy, but it lost some advantages of the former one.
New political conditions, the general changes of the foreign trade
territorial structure, payments in hard currency, narrow commodity
structure of the export to the PRC, termination of the important
supplies of power-producing equipment, poor quality of some
exported products, all these features and some others contributed to
the decline of the Czechoslovak trade with the PRC at the beginning
of the
1990s.
After the split of Czechoslovakia, the trade relations
between the Czech Republic and the PRC has been characterised by
both the gradual increase of the entire volume of the mutual trade
and the substantial imbalance between the Czech exports to the PRC
and the imports from the PRC. The growing deficit in the Czech trade
with the PRC has been the logical consequence of the trend.
