Sixteenth-Century Sources of Political Culture
of Poland-Lithuania. Texts of
1562
SUMMARY
The idea to prepare a thematic collection of the Polish-Lithuanian historical sources of political
culture in the sixteenth century began to form some time ago. The research into the history of the
gentry of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania made this topic still more urgent. This issue became par¬
ticularly pressing after the turn of an interpretation of a
1562
event into a historiographical stereo¬
type. At the start of the twentieth century Matvei Liubavskii and
Oskar Halecki
declared that in the
early seventh decade of the sixteenth century the social groups of the GDL
-
the magnates and middle
and lower nobility (the gentry,
szlachta)
-
differently treated the prospect of a union with Poland. By
that time the Lithuanian gentry had already taken over the system of political values appreciated by
the Polish gentry and were for a more speedy unification of the two states and societies while the
grouping of the great magnates led only by the Radvilas resisted that move.
The general intention is to widen the limits of historical knowledge and to generate new discus¬
sions about the political culture of the Lithuanian gentry in the context of modern historiography.
This culture should be collated with the corresponding contemporary culture of the Kingdom of
Poland, with the political stance of various social groupings and with the examination of their mo¬
tives and other aspects of the coexistence of the two states that have not yet received proper atten¬
tion. However, the implementation of these aims is feasible only in the presence of easily accessible
published sources.
This publication comprises several simultaneous political texts produced in Poland and Lithuania
in
1562,
including those that served the basis for the statements of Liubavskii and Halecki about the
political orientation of the gentry of the GDL. A parallel publication of the political texts matured in
the milieus of the Polish and Lithuanian nobility should encourage their detailed textological com¬
parative studies employing the methods of modern historiography.
According to the scholarly classification of sources this publication should be attributed to the group
of thematic collections. The texts can be divided into two groups. The first covers the documents
written on behalf of the groupings of persons and addressed to the ruler. The second group is the
ruler's replies. The subject matter of these political documents deals with the problems essential for
the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
The originals of the texts are unknown. They are published from the copies which are found in
two different sources. One of them is the anonymous Chronicle of the events in Poland and Lithuania

1562.
In addition to the author's stories and commentaries it also contains copies
of the texts written by other persons or their groups. It is unknown whether the copies of the Chronicle
were made from originals or from other copies. The text of the Chronicle itself which could be called
original has not been found either.

The spelling and punctuation of the Chronicle texts are not standardised. Proper nouns are written
both with a capital and small letter at the beginning, and the same two words can be written sepa¬
rately or as one word. It is sometimes difficult to determine whether graphically some words are
written separately or jointly. The copyist used a lot of signs, the form of which often coincides with
the marks of punctuation. Therefore no marks of punctuation are used in the published texts since
their use would be open to a false interpretation. In the publication the Chronicle texts are presented
in transcription. That makes the publication a valuable source of study not only for historians but
also for linguists, researchers of the Polish texts of the latter half of the sixteenth century.
