Farouk deserves much credit for keeping Egypt s dreams of
independence alive. In standing up to the British, he set a
powerful example to the other vassal states of the Middle East, an
example that would be followed by sundry military strongmen
across the Arab world from Algeria to Iraq in the years ahead.
Farouk was unique in declaring his independence as an
incumbent ruler and not as a military revolutionary.

In Nasser the British got an Egyptian despot and lost Suez, and
in Nasser America got its boy and lost control. America s
missionary zeal to create a world in its own image, and its glee to
see the end of monarchy in Egypt and later in Iraq in
1958
when
the royal family was slaughtered in front of of its own palaces,
completely backfired. What America wanted was democracy.
What it got were military dictatorships far more autocratic and
tyrannical than the royalty ever was.
♦J* Instead of being venerated as the George Washington of Egypt,
the man who ended British colonialism and established a nation
once and for all, Farouk was lampooned as the avatar of
extravagance and decadence and hot times in the Cold War era.
Yet he was a leader faced with an impossible task of leadership
that remains unsolved today. The tragedy of King Farouk is that he
almost pulled it off.
