adam_text | SUMMARY
SEMPER FIDELIS.
The story of the 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov
The short history of the 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov or one sho¬
uld rather say, of the unit which carried this proud name, abounded in many important and
significant events. Somewhat over
5
years of its existance
-
and during that time the unit
formation within the confines of the 6th Infantry Division Lvov commanded by general
M. Tokarzewski-Karaszewicz, under the name The Children of Lvov , and later the Re¬
connaissance Division
-
all these in an inhuman land
-
the Soviet Union, and later in the
Middle East the 6th Tank Battalion, the 6th Armoured Regiment, and finally the 6th Armo¬
ured Regiment The Children of Lvov in Italy and Great Britain. All these under the
golden lion sign taken from the crest of the always faithful city.
The war route of this unit followed general
Władysław
Anders Army s route from
Tockoje in the Soviet Union, through Szahrisjabs in Uzbekistan, later through Persia, Iraq
-
where The Children of Lvov became an armoured unit, Palestine, Egypt, to finally
engage in combat
-
on
1
9th May
1944
the Regiment fought in a battle near Piedimonte
-
on
Hitler s Line . And then the unit followed the combat trail
-
through
Loreto, Ankona,
Gothic Line as far as to Bologna near
Canale di Medicina, in
the Bologna Battle, where
The Children of Lvov ended their combat trail.
Afterwards, the regiment was doing a garrison service in Italy
-
in Montefano
-
until
June-July
1946,
when having left its tanks, the regiment went to England. There the unit
found its place in Duncombe Park (within the confines of Polish Resettlement Corps).
Also there, in December
1946
the 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov was
disbanded. In specialist literature there has not been so far a monograph presenting the
history of the armoured regiment within the
2nd
Polish Corps, especially of the unit which
was a complete creation of those specific forming conditions of general
Władysław
An¬
ders Army. This dissertation shows, for the first time, the history of the unit, which arised
in difficult conditions of the Soviet Union, and later fought in Italy to end its combat trail in
England.
From the very beginning it was a founder s intention to create a unit which would be,
and was in fact, for special and more difficult combat tasks. General
Michał
Tokarzewski-
Karaszewicz, creating this special unit , used an element holding together young people
from Lvov and its neighbourhood to create a uniform and efficient tactical unit. Common
roots and Lvov spirit became a perfect bond joining soldiers serving in this unit together.
The common idea, so much stressed since the beginning of the unit s existence, characteri¬
stic for the defenders of the always faithful city
-
Lvov
-
from
1918
and
1939,
became a
unifying element, creating a uniform whole consisting of officers and privates serving in
The Children of Lvov unit. An additional joining element for The Children of Lvov
was hostility of the Soviet authorities towards any ideological elements emphasizing Poli-
shness of the Eastern borderlands
-
in particular the city of Lvov, which was a symbol of
Polish identity. This caused an additional strong motivation unifying The Children of
Lvov and giving them a sense of community. Also the influence of the first The Children
SUMMARY
of Lvov battalion commander major
Eugeniusz Ślepecki,
-
the officer of the Lvov garri¬
son between WWI and WWII and the
1939
Lvov city defender, was very significant in
this process.
Extremely hard conditions, while creating the unit in Tockoje and Szachrizjabs, ma¬
king the unit formation process difficult, prison and Soviet forcedlabour camps experience,
exiles in Kazakhstan and Archangielsk region experienced by the vast majority of this unit
soldiers, were additional factors unifying soldiers. Health problems, which were difficult
to overcome in harsh conditions of Russian steppe.although The Children of Lvov bat¬
talion mainly consisted of young people, is another element of this process. Despite this
fight for a soldier s health, many among The Children of Lvov soldiers were ill and some
of them still suffered from malaria during Italian campaign.
A transformation process of The Children of Lvov unit
-
in the Middle East
-
from an
infantry unit into a modern armoured unit, was an element confirming bonds unifying The
Children of Lvov . The presented difficulties, straggled by the unit soldiers during a diffi¬
cult and long training, became an unquestionable asset in the modern armoured unit forma¬
tion process. A significant fact was that The Children of Lvov regiment mainly consisted
of young people with high intelligence. This gave additional opportunities which made the
training faster and learning new and unknown to The Children of Lvov so far abilities
easier. The intensive training, in very good supply conditions, produced excellent results. It
enabled to form from The Children of Lvov a technically welltrained armoured unit,
which had not lost this specific, and additionally motivating to training and combat work,
Lvov spirit . It was characteristic for the whole period of the unit s existance
-
this absorp¬
tion , by this Lvov in spirit unit,
-
of people who had had nothing in common with this
borderland city so far. The examples serve
Henryk
Czorny, the regiment chaplain and a
priest from Silesia, who until his death remained faithful to The Children of Lvov
-
as a
chairman of their regiment association, and
Andrzej
Rutana,
the regiment doctor.
The first fight of the 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov for Piedimonte
San Germano,
within the Separated Unit called Bob , confirmed The Children s of Lvov
combat assets. The troopers professionality, under the banner of the golden lion, in extre-
melly difficult mountainous conditions, enabled an efficient combat targets execution.
Controversy concerning this combat evaluation, in particular disputes connected with
the usage of the tanks in such unfavourable for the armoured units action area, additionally
emphasize The Children s of Lvov combat abilities. A detailed analysis of the troopers
actions during first contact with an enemy, as well as officers and soldiers attitudes, allows
to draw conclusions connected with multidimensional evaluation of this unit condition. It
also allowed of an analysis of the particular Regiment components such as command, sup¬
ply, contact and also cooperation of the modernly equipped with quick-firing weapon unit
with other kinds of weapon used in Piedimonte battle. Controversy also concerns evalu¬
ation of different decisions made by colonel
Władysław Bobiński,
who commanded the
Bob Group. In this prospect, the attitude of the regiment commander lieutenant-colonel
Świetlicki,
who prudently and with great knowledge of the armoured trade, led the regi¬
ment to this first fight, confirmed excellent virtues and command training of this officer.
Similar features had the last commander of The Children of Lvov Regiment
-
major and
later lieutenant-colonel
Feliks Motyka
-
the officer, who served in the unit from the very
beginning
-
from Tockoje. Lieutenant-colonel
Motyka
showed during the whole Italian cam¬
paign the best features of a perfect commander, and simultaneously, of a representative of his
own generation
-
the
1918
Lvov defender, and later, a Polish Army professional officer.
SUMMARY
This first Regiment s battle was also important because near Piedimonte
San Germano
the regiment suffered the largest losses in the whole Italian campaign. The killed in action
The Children of Lvov died among thousands of others who laid down their lives captu¬
ring Monte Casino monastic hill, and later storming the Hitler s Line .
The participation of the 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov in the whole
Italian campaign, from Piedimonte through Ankona Battle,
Apenin Emiliański
operations,
fights to break through Gothic Line , to the last the
2nd
Corps combat to capture Bologna,
confirmed combat virtues of this unit soldiers. Especially important place fell to Ankona
Battle, which was an operation prepared and carried out by the
2nd
Polish Corps Command
and units. The fact of using an armoured strike of the
2nd
Armoured Brigade, whose mano¬
euvre successfully finished the capturing operation of the biggest harbour on the Adriatic
coast in Italy, is a perfect example of using commanding and soldier s abilities. During this ~
operation the 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov proved its excellent abili¬
ties and tactic artistry of its commander.
The Analysis of the 6th Armoured Regiment s The Children of Lvov participation
in further the
2nd
Polish Corps combats from
Apenin Emiliański
through Gothic Line to
Bologna, proved excellent combat virtues of the unit. The regiment, as the only one among
the
2nd
Armoured Brigade s units, superbly operated the entire regiment s forces in Anko¬
na operation, as well as particular squadrons in Adriatic warfare. The regiment s participa¬
tion in further Corps operations showed, what a wellarmed, aware of the aims he is figh¬
ting for soldier can do. The analysis of the particular warfares proved excellent The Chil¬
dren of Lvov soldiers virtues.
The regiment s soldiers attitude towards Italian local people, especially visible during
the regiment s winter rest in Bibbiena and Montefano, proved high moral virtues of the
young soldiers, who kept them despite personal experiences from Soviet forcedlabour camps
and exiles. Just in these conditions the regiment s soldiers showed their sensitivity to civi¬
lians and in particular children s suffering in wartime. An example of Christmas, which
was organised in regiment for poor Italian children, shows that this sensitivity to children s
suffering element, did not apply only to Polish children, who general Anders managed to
lead out with the army from the Soviet Union.
The Children of Lvov soldiers also supported various social initiatives within the
2nd
Corps
-
such as a social fund offering help to Polish civilians, regiment s support and
care of Polish Y.S. Cadet School in Barbara, and also voluntary donations from soldier s
pay to help Polish people in Germany and Warsaw.
As one of the very few the
2nd
Corps regiments, the 6th Armoured Regiment The
Children of Lvov received
a standart
in May
1946 -
a symbol of pride and identification of
this unit soldiers. An additional symbolic element of this situation was a fact that The
Children s of Lvov
standart
was funded by Polish emigrants in France. There is something
symbolic in the fact that soon after this solemn event, the regiment s soldiers had to give
their
standart
back, and themselves became scattered all over the world by difficult war and
independence emigrant s fate.
Another element was an education issue among the regiment s soldiers. As it has been
stressed before, the young people forming The Children of Lvov , had high
intelectual
level, which combined with the
2nd
Corps commander s concern to ensure the soldiers
further educational possibilities, produced excellent results. They were just those, among
others, educational initiatives (schools,
matura
courses, university agreements etc.), and
SUMMARY
also cultural (publishing houses, newspapers, theatres) and sport ones, that gained Regi¬
ment soldiers understanding and recognition. The regiment s football team was very suc¬
cessful. Those elements of sport, cultural and educational life became particularly impor¬
tant once the war was over.
For the victorious in combat soldiers, the end was tragic, which resulted from the
2nd
Corps transportation to England and later its dissolution and transformation into Polish
Resettlement Corps. It was then, when The Children of Lvov had to make the most
difficult life decisions, which resulted in The Children s of Lvov scattering across the
world
-
from Canada and the USA, through Western Europe countries, Africa, to Australia.
Many young people from Lvov and other borderland cities chose a difficult life in exile.
This characteristic for many The Children of Lvov soldiers process of maturing to stay¬
ing in exile decision was presented.
That is how the story of the Polish Armed Forces unit in the West, but not The Chil¬
dren s of Lvov story ended. Like the beloved city, from which the Regiment derived its
name, and which has in its motto semper
fídelis ,
-
its soldiers
-
The Children of Lvov
(regardless how long they served in this regiment) remained faithful to their city motto.
Bonds created during common fights resulted in the soldieres need to keep contact
with one another. The formation process of the 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of
Lvov Association, with its peace garrison in Leeds, and its activity was shown. Here, the
person of the regiment chaplain
-
Henryk Czorny
-
has to be stressed again and his role in
this postwar period. The association members activity, which resulted in many initiatives
(such as cementary reconstruction in
Loreto
and regiment s monument in Piediminte) was
also shown. It is not important, where this Polish, difficult fate scattered them to, they
remained faithfil to this exclusive golden lion club
-
as one of its members used to call the
Regiment Association. By means of a few characteristic examples, further, postwar expe¬
riences of 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov soldiers were presented
-
both
those who lived abroad and those who came back to the country.
Personal details of over
1200
officers and soldiers who served in The Children of
Lvov unit, portray fates of the people forming this unique the
2nd
Corps unit. While
collecting materials to this thesis, an additional biographical entries set was created, which
supplements the regiment s collective picture by means of particular officers and soldiers
fate describtions.
In this disertation, it was attempted to mantain this peculiar balance between The
Children of Lvov Regiment s combat actions as an armoured unit and presenting the hi¬
story of the people forming this unit. The Children of Lvov unit, which was created as a
kind of a response to all those voices and threats, hesitant at first, louder later and finally
importunate and brutal, questioning Polish rights to Eastern borderlands, whose Lvov was
a heroic embodiment, became an event in itself, a historical event which cannot be neglec¬
ted. The 6th Armoured Regiment The Children of Lvov as one of the best the
2nd
Polish
Corps unit, was as a whole decorated with the Silver Cross of the Military order
Virtuti
Militari in 1966
for extraordinary battlefield actions in the Italian campaign.
