After
the
1989 Islamist
coup in
Sudan,
the
National
Islamic
Front
under
General
Omar al-Bashir and Hasan al-Turabi
institutionalized, codified and implemented Shari a
throughout the country. However, by
2005,
with
the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement
ending
22
years of civil war that began in the year
that Shari a was made state law, the government
agreed to halt its policy of Islamization in the
South. Shari a and
Islamism
in Sudan explores
how Sudanese society has been transformed by
this period of implementation of Islamic law, and
furthermore interrogates the consequences of these
policies including the separation of South Sudan
in July
2011.
Is Sudan experiencing a post-Islamist
transition or continuation of the Islamist policies
that were a major factor leading to the separation
of Sudan into two
Sudans,
North and South?
A country known mostly for the international
attention paid to its humanitarian crisis and civil
conflict, Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban puts the spotlight
on Sudanese society itself, and the impact that the
mobilization, manipulation and then demobilization
of Islamic law has had throughout Sudan. She thus
offers an unprecedented analysis of the initial policies
implemented and the frameworks set in place in
order to influence both private and public spheres.
She then goes on to demonstrate the pervading
impact this has had on family law, including
marriage, adoption and divorce laws and procedures,
as well as the effects on criminal law and other
sectors of Islamic law and society.
The
2005
agreement to withdraw Shari a and the
Islamization policy from the South also begs the
question, how did the concerted efforts to Islamize
transform Muslim-Christian and North-South
relations in Sudan? By examining contemporary
debates concerning the role of
klam,
both in the
institutions of government and everyday life, Fluehr-
Lobban questions the future of Islamist politics in

She further asks how the ramifications of
Islamism
continue to manifest themselves in
the courtroom, classroom and in the home.
With data drawn from Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban s
most recent research in the region, this book is a

Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban is Professor
Emerita
of Anthropology and Joint Doctoral Program
in Education at Rhode Island College and
Adjunct Professor of African Studies at Naval
War College. Her research topics cover Islamic
law and society, women s social and legal
status in the Muslim world, human rights and
cultural relativism, ethics and anthropology and
comparative studies in law and society.
