Les pharmacies de famille dans les manoirs
de la noblesse Polonaise.
Etude de l histoire de la culture sanitaire
Les pharmacies de famille constituèrent une partie intégrale de la structure des
manoirs polonais aux XVIIIe et
pour la pro-pagation de la culture sanitaire à la campagne polonaise. Pour étudier le
fonctionnement des pharmacies de famille du point de vue de l histoire des sciences
et de la culture, il était nécessaire de faire des recherches systématiques et détaillées.
Nous avons étudié avant tout des fonds des archives renfermant des sources manu¬
scrites, à savoir: des livres tenus par des propriétaires des manoirs, des notices médi¬
cales, des lettres, des chroniques et des carnets, mais aussi des documents imprimés:
des guides pratiques de médecine, des calendriers, ainsi que des publications pério¬
diques adressées aux femmes. Ce fut surtout dans les documents manuscrits
rerum
les espérances. Un grand nombre d ordonnances et de conseils médicaux (surtout des
copies plus ou moins fidèles des herbiers de la Renaissance et des travaux de J.K
Haur) confirme l indépendance des manoirs dans le domaine des procédés thérapeu¬
tiques. Les pages médicales de plus en plus nombreuses dans les calendriers comme
dans des revues, de même que le nombre croissant des guides pratiques de médecine
sous forme des livres, semblent prouver qu on s est rendu compte d accès difficile aux
soins médicaux et aux pharmacies. On a donc réalisé la nécessité de propager et
diffuser la science médicale à la province polonaise, de sorte que les femmes pussent
mieux jouer le rôle des médecins de famille .
La santé précaire des provinciaux polonais, surtout des paysans, n échappait pas
aux Amis des Sciences, Société Savante de Varsovie
concours pour la rédaction d une publication universelle, de haute vulgarisation, qui
devait présenter les méthodes de sauvetage et d aide aux victimes des accidents, ainsi
que le savoir sur les médicaments de première nécessité.
Les pharmacies de famille des manoirs de la noblesse, tout comme les gardiennes
des pharmacies en question, se situent aux confins du foklore populaire et de la cul¬
ture officielle, puisque leur savoir découlait

plus haut - du savoir traditionnel populaire. Parmi les remèdes ordonnés par les
femmes du milieu des propriétaires fonciers il y avait des mixtures composées suivant
les symboles magiques des plantes officinales et même des incantations (méthodes
qui avoisinaient la magie). Les plantes officinales furent fournies aux pharmacies des
manoirs par les paysannes. C est surtout le contenu de deux journaux cités dans
notre livre, a savoir celui de
Leśniewska

de la situation d une femme qui voulait se rendre utile à la société. Elle a pu réaliser
son objectif: terminer (non sans difficulté et contre l avis défavorable des autorités de
l université) les études en pharmacie. Ainsi, au tournant du XIXe et du XXe siècles,
une femme pouvait-elle disposer d un savoir professionnel pour servir les malades.
Cet intérêt précurseur que les Polonaises manifestaient pour les sciences
naturelles, et surtout pour les sciences médicales, venait sans doute de leur devoir
traditionnel et éternel de connaître les plantes officinales et de soigner les malades.
Remplir des fonctions utiles était pour les femmes une source de satisfaction, mais
cela stimulait également leurs ambitions. La réalisation de ces ambitions c étaient
les études universitaires. Certaines femmes tentèrent de divulguer leur savoir en
rédigeant des articles dans des publications périodiques qui consacraient quelques
pages aux problèmes de santé et d hygiène, elles jouèrent un rôle important dans
la propagation de la culture sanitaire. D autres cherchaient â trouver leur place dans
des centres universitaires. Les femmes de notre milieu culturel, provenant surtout
des familles nobles, préféraient les études en sciences naturelles, contrairement aux
bourgeoises de l Europe de l Ouest qui choisissaient plutôt les études en sciences
humaines. Il y a donc une continuité historique entre les femmes qui soignaient les
malades de leur famille et les femmes médecins ou pharmaciennes actuelles, ainsi

A study on the history of medical culture
The household medicine cabinet was an integral part of the structure at the manors of
the Polish nobility in the 18th and 19th centuries. It played an enormous role in the dis¬
semination of the medical culture in the Polish countryside. Retracing the functioning of
the medicine cabinets from the point of view of the history of science as well as history
of culture called for detailed investigations, primarily in the archives, covering the
manor ledgers, medical notes, letters, entries in diaries and chronicles, as well as prints-
medical guidebooks, calendars and periodicals addressed to women. The hand-written
documents
of prescriptions and medical advice copied primarily from the Renaissance herbaria and
works of J.K. Haur confirm the self-sufficiency of the manors in matters of medical
treatment. The presence of the very extensive medical sections in both calendars and
periodicals, as well as the increasing offer of guidance in the form of books, show that
notice was taken of the problem of inaccessibility of physicians and dispensing chemists
as well as the n?~essity of disseminating medical knowledge in order that the women
in the Polish provinces could better play the role of household physicians . The bad
state of health of, above all, the agricultural workers in the Polish countryside was also
noted by the members of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science
their initiative a competition had been opened for a universal popular-science publica¬
tion aiming to supply knowledge on the methods of first aid and the most useful medi¬
cines.
The manor medicine cabinets and their custodians may be placed on the borderline
between the popular folklore and the official culture, as the source of their knowledge,
apart from those already mentioned, was also the traditional folk knowledge. Among the
prescriptions used by the gentlewomen were the mixtures using the magical symbolism
of herbs typical of the rural medicine-women, and even charming away (methods bor¬
dering on magic). Suppliers of the plants to the manor medicine cabinets were the rural
women.
Gaining an appreciation of the situation of women who made an effort to disseminate
medical education is assisted in a particular way by the two diaries cited: of

workers, the former obtained her knowledge primarily from Haur and from the charita¬
ble ladies ; she was self-taught and realised that, with the very limited range of medi¬
cines, appropriate diet for the sick may also be of assistance. The second diary, written

of pharmacy) was, albeit with a great deal of effort and even against the hostile univer¬
sity authorities, achieved. At the turn of the 19th century, a woman could already assist
the sick with professional knowledge.
The pioneer interest of Polish women in natural, primarily medical, science was clearly
a consequence of their traditional age-old duty to study the effects of medicines and take
care of the sick. Performing useful functions gave women satisfaction and aroused their
ambitions, and achieving university education was their fulfilment. Some of the women
turned their interests towards popularising knowledge and as authors of articles in perio¬
dicals addressing the issues of health and hygiene played a major role in their dissemi¬
nation. Others tried to find a place at universities. The women from our cultures, origi¬
nating primarily from noble families, preferred the studies of natural science, unlike the
city women of Western Europe who studied the humanities. There is thus historic conti¬
nuity between the women engaged in household medical treatment and the modern edu¬
cated doctors or pharmacists and, to go further, also the female scientists in other areas
