Art endowments in the town of
A study in the history of culture
The town of
contemporary Polish Commonwealth
who are engaged in trade, crafts and agriculture. Due to the presence of the episcopal
abode the town also had a character of a residential centre. Besides, it was a typical
private city, the administrative centre of the estates which belonged to Krakow bishops,
and additionally as the episcopal judiciary centre with a regional office. It was also
a centre of religious life, the abode of the collegiate chapter, the archdeaconship and the
parish, and in the 18th century, additionally the town was the seat of a theological
seminary. And last but not least, a cult centre, with the painting of The Mother of God with
the Infant Christ.
This country town preserves records of people who performed various offices both in
church and in lay structures. Some of them took actions which transcended everyday
duties; they founded buildings, altars, pictures, sculptures, works of applied art and
books. This group was not numerous; only
activity in

most numerous group in both centuries included works of applied, mostly fabrics, books,
elements of church interior decoration: altars, pictures, sculptures and epitaphs, stalls,
choirs, boxes, benches, confessionals, tabernacles, and also architectural endowments
which included not only the completed structures but also numerous endowments for the
construction of churches.

a poor town with a small number of men of means, and therefore the structure of offered
gifts was characteristic: a distinct prevalence of rather inexpensive cloths. The more

Equally difficult, and not only due to the lack of source materials, is the answer to the
second question concerning the reasons of the foundation activity. Most of the
founders followed practical motives; they treated their activity as the duty of the faithful,
a tribute to the Church, and also a kind of passport to heaven . One cannot exclude less
practical intentions, i.e. the love and worship of God, His Mother
Polish Crown, or saints, who, in the testator s belief, provided special care for him. For
many people endowments were manifestations of affection for the church in which they
performed priestly service or participated in the religious life of the community. They
were also a more or less conscious attempts to record oneself in human memory;
a confirmation of material status and the public role in the local community. Finally, some
founders, mostly bishops and canons of the

A question arises: was it patronage or foundation activity? The considerations made in
this study univocally opt for the second term, which seems to be more adequate with
reference to the activities of almost all donors connected with
definition is not the most essential problem. The list of the quantity and quality of
endowments, social status of founders, degree of the commitment in the foundation
activity of various character, cannot be compared, and the formulated conclusions cannot
be verified with data from other localities because such complex investigations have not
been conducted with reference to any municipal centre in old-time Poland.
The execution of research, similar to this in the present study, with reference to other
centres in Poland is the most important investigative postulate which is formulated in the
conclusion. Until a synthetic study of artistic patronage in modern Poland, postulated by
Mariusz Karpowicz,
activities of outstanding individuals and modest endowments, including the foundation
activity of different social groups in small and large municipal centres. Results of this
research will permit to view the history of modern art on a much wider scale, not only in
its historic-aesthetical dimension, but also as the result of the foundation commitment of
individuals and all groups. This commitment was the result of free decision caused by
different religious, psychological, political or economic motives; sometimes it was simply
the effect of holding a public office by these individuals or a sense of fulfilling one s duty.
The effect of such commitment is always the work implicating apart from strictly material
or artistic values also a message which the founder sends to the receiver, and more
precisely to the addressee of his or her foundation. An attempt of reading this message has
also become an attempt at finding an answer to a question fundamental for our consider¬
ations
discussed in this book.

a wish which was accurately expressed by one of them
