Chapter 1: Design Principles
This chapter discusses the different design principles related to the
user interface environment and how the various GUIs manifest these
principles
Chapter 2: Desktop
This chapter introduces the desktop and its environment It de-
scribes the metaphor, appearance, and functions performed by the
various GUI desktops It discusses the object-oriented paradigm and
how it will affect the look and feel of the desktop Lastly, it presents
design guidelines for customizing icons on the desktop
Chapter 3: Windows
This chapter describes the basic elements and controls of a win-
dow It discusses the conceptual and functional differences of windows
for the different GUI environments It discusses the comparison of
window types, the hierarchy of windows, window arrangements, and
window behaviors
Chapter 4: Menus
This chapter provides an overview of menus, their orientation,
typical components, and various types of menus It describes in detail
the appearance and behavior of these menu types It compares the
menus and menu items associated with the desktop, application and
document windows, and objects
Chapters: Controls
This chapter describes in detail the various controls used in con-
structing a window (application, document, or dialog box) In addition,
it discusses the new controls that are specific to multimedia applica-
tions It discusses the appearance, function, behavior, and usage of the
various controls as well as the similarities and differences of the con-
trols supported by the GUIs in the comparison
Chapter 6: Dialog Boxes
This chapter discusses the fundamental elements of a dialog box,
the various controls that can appear in them, the types of dialog boxes
according to various characteristics or behaviors, and dialog boxes

common to all applications It also presents a summary of the various
dialog box controls supported by the GUIs in the comparison It pre-
sents guidelines for designing dialog boxes with respect to selection of
the appropriate type of dialog box, selection of appropriate dialog box
controls, and overall layout of the dialog box (placement, size, density,
and organization) Lastly, it discusses how new metaphors and tech-
nologies such as multimedia are affecting the look and feel of dialog
boxes
Chapter 7; Interaction and Feedback
This chapter describes the interaction model, which defines the
communication between the user and the computer It discusses the
various interaction devices such as the keyboard, mouse, pen, touch
screen, and speech recognition, along with the operations they employ
It discusses the object-action model and focus, object types and classes,
and manipulation principles It discusses the selection concept includ-
ing selection highlighting, selection types, and various selection tech-
niques for the different data objects Lastly, it discusses the graphical,
textual, and auditory feedback provided by the GUIs in the comparison
as a result of the interaction
Appendix A: Comparison of Windowing System Component
Terminology
This appendix provides a comparison of terms and definitions of
the different windowing system components used by the different GUI
environments
Appendix B: Comparison of Windowing System Components—
Graphical Representations
This appendix illustrates the graphical representations for the
different windowing system components used by the different GUI
environments
