Abstract: | The ability to facilitate learning is perhaps the teacher's most awesome task. How do teachers release the great potential of learners and organize teaching so as to satisfy both pupils' aspirations and societal requirements? Writing from years of experience - as a teacher, headteacher and local authority adviser - the author's main theme is that, as well as instruction and practice, learners need the skills and the opportunities to reflect deliberately on the process of learning itself. They need to know how the mind copes with information, about the techniques of memorizing and recalling data, the problems of forgetting and not quite understanding, the planning of complex tasks and the careful preparation and organization needed to get things done. Drawing from significant writers and thinkers in the area, the author has written a book which is thought-provoking, absorbing and extremely practical. |
