Gray Line has written what must be
considered the definitive chronicle of
the Persian Gulf War.
The war lasted a mere forty-two days,
but the military had been preparing for
it ever since the defeat in Vietnam. Rick
Atkinson follows the unfolding battle
from the first night to the final day, pro¬
viding vivid accounts of bombing runs
and White House strategy sessions, fire-
fights and bitter
interservice
conflicts.
He brings to life a rich cast of characters:
Norman Schwarzkopf, a man very differ¬
ent from his public image; Colin Powell,
whose motto is Never let them see you
sweat ; a host of senior officers; and
men such as David Eberiy, who was show¬
down over Iraq and barely survived
imprisonment in Baghdad. As individual
stories weave into the larger narrative,
we come to understand that the allied
campaign against Saddam Hussein was a
wholly new kind of war, one that has
transformed the nature of modem war¬
fare.
Stealth bombers, smart weaponry,
nighttime tank battles in the desert
—
all these made the conflict in Iraq
unique. Also unprecedented was the
Pentagon s policy of severely restricting
the media s access to the battlefield,
making comprehensive coverage impos¬
sible. But as soon as the final shots were
fired, Atkinson began searching out
those who directed and fought the war,
and through more than five hundred
interviews he uncovered a great deal of
new information. For the first time, we
learn details of the widespread use of
amphetamines and sedatives by Ameri¬
can pilots, the secret decision to launch
Tomahawk missiles across Iran, the
continued from front flap
clandestine deployment of Delta Force
for Scud hunting.
Like all wars, the conflict in the Per¬
sian Gulf was a complex human drama,
one that calls for a writer of Rick
Atkinson s stature and talent. Astonish¬
ingly fresh, powerfully written, Crusade
is destined to become a classic story of
the American military at war.
Rick Atkinson won a Pulitzer Prize in
1982
for a series of articles on West
Point s Class of
1966,
which became the
basis for his best-selling book, The Long
Gray Line. A veteran staff reporter for
the Washington Post, he wrote the
Post s lead stories during the Gulf War.
The winner of many journalism awards,
he recently became the Post s bureau
chief in Berlin.
