Abstract: | Abstract: "This paper proposes and analyzes the design of a broadcast network as an alternative processor-memory interconnection network for shared-memory multiprocessors. It is shown that such a network can be used for efficient synchronization because it can eliminate hot spots due to spin-waiting. Simulation results show that hardware broadcasting not only decreases synchronization overhead, but also increases network performance for non-synchronization traffic. The hardware complexity of broadcast networks can be significantly less than combining networks, making them a more practical alternative for real systems. Their possible use in supporting distributed cache coherence is also discussed." |
