Beschreibung:The largest Iron Age fortification in Suffolk, and the only one upstanding, covers 7ha. Three separate excavations spanning the period 1900-75 are reported. The earthwork probably dates to 1st century BC; a destruction layer of c AD 15-25 was followed by wheel-made 'Belgic' style pottery of Colchester type with Gallo-Belgic imported wares. An inner enclosure of 1ha may be pre-Roman; although part of it was flattened c 60, occupation continued well into 4th century with indications of a villa with hypocaust and tessellated floors. Burgh Church (Late Saxon) lies within the enclosure. The site is discussed within a wider context. Au (abr)
