| Abstract: | ... It is Rodney Graham’s Lenz that Kraus draws on directly. When Graham read Büchner’s Lenz in Mueller’s translation, he discovered that it contained the phrase "through the forest" twice in quick succession. ... Graham adopts Büchner’s novella in its entirety, but rearranges it so that the phrase "through the forest" is both times torn apart by a page break. Then he generates further repetitions by implanting a loop at this point of fracture that—eighty-four times—keeps sending Lenz through the forest over and over again, and condemns the reader to an unusually intensive close reading of the first dramatic pages of the novella. Kraus sets herself the task of translating Graham’s Lenz from English into German, but bases her "translation" on the original German Büchner text, thus eliminating the task of translating the wording of the text.
