Abstract:At the end of the 19th century, the Berlin bank Hagen & Co. developed into a major financial institution specializing in industrial financing, with Bayerische Motorenwerke as one of its clients. The bank’s founder, Carl Hagen, collected art and was a patron of the Berlin National Gallery. Beginning in 1933, the Hagen family was persecuted and forced to sell assets. Other property, such as household goods, was confiscated. Little is known about the objects in Carl Hagen’s collection so archival material from the art trade is of particular importance. The article focuses on the history of the Hagen family and describes how the Munich art dealer Julius Böhler handled the acquisition of objects from Carl Hagen beginning in 1936.
