Abstract:"In James Ensor’s varied oeuvre, satire is one of his most beloved means of expression. The often grating and sometimes downright shameless humour of the Ostend painter appears in grotesque or burlesque scenes in which he unhesitatingly mocks historical facts, denounces social injustice or criticises the politics of his time. When he himself was the victim of incomprehension in his immediate environment and a target for critics at the beginning of his career, satire became his defence weapon par excellence, both in words and images. Satire would eventually become an essential component of the diversity in his oeuvre."
