Abstract: | Jeremy O. Harris's play "Daddy": A Melodrama is a surreal and provocative exploration of intimacy, identity, art patronage and exploitation, focussing on a young black artist and his relationship with an older white art collector. It was first performed as a co-production between The New Group and Vineyard Theatre, at The New Group, New York City, on 13 February 2019, and received its British premiere at the Almeida Theatre, London, on 26 March 2022. The play is set in and around a swimming pool in a mansion in Bel Air, Los Angeles, belonging to Andre, an immensely rich art collector, white, in his fifties/sixties. Franklin, a guest at the house, is an up-and-coming artist, black, mid-twenties, in thrall to Andre. Before long, their feverish connection develops into an unbreakable bond. But when Franklin's mother, Zora, decides that her son is in peril, she enters into a battle of wills with Andre over the soul of the man they both call ‘baby’. The New York premiere was directed by Danya Taymor and designed by Matt Saunders (set), Montana Levi Blanco (costumes), Isabella Byrd (lighting) and Lee Kinney (sound). It was performed by Ronald Peet, Alan Cumming, Tommy Dorfman, Kahyun Kim, Charlayne Woodard, Hari Nef, Carrie Compere, Denise Manning and Onyie Nwachukwu. The London premiere was directed and designed by the same team, and performed by Terique Jarrett, Claes Bang, John McCrea, Ioanna Kimbook, Sharlene Whyte, Jenny Rainsford, Rebecca Bernice Amissah, Keisha Atwell and T’Shan Williams |
