Summary Vyšehrad-type tiles - Romanesque hexagonal tiles decorated with four different reliefs (lion, griffin, sphinx, Emperor Nero) - are regarded as the oldest ceramic relief tiles in the country. These are accompanied by smaller undecorated triangular tiles and square tiles with plant relief. There has been a dispute over their actual age since the end of the 19th century, with one side dating the tiles to the final third of the 11th century (Hejdová - Nechvátal 1970, 403-406), the other to the second quarter of the 12th century (Merhautová 1988, 10-27). If we do in fact date them to the final third of the 11th century, this would be the oldest ceramic tile in Central Europe, whereas the later dating would make the tiles the same age as the oldest finds from the surrounding areas. The earlier dating is supported by the results of an archae ological excavation at Prague’s Vyšehrad, whereas the later dating is based on excavations at defunct Benedictine Ostrov Monastery in Davie. The dating to the final third of the 11th century is deduced from the determination of the age of the Basilica of St Lawrence at Vyšehrad, where the Vyšehrad-type floor was uncovered in situ (Nechvátal 2009, 166-284; Varadzin 2009, 302-399). The basilica is dated using a combina tion of indirect evidence, i.e. the specific Hirsau-type struc ture, which is documented by the preserved floor plan and the presence of coins from the reign of the Přemyslid Prince Vratislav II (1061-1092, king from 1085) deliberately depos ited in the grave. This grave is part of a cemetery respect ing the ground
plan of the basilica. Also emphasised is the importance that Vratislav IPs reign had for Vyšehrad. The prince transferred his royal residence from Prague Castle to Vyšehrad and founded a chapter here directly subordinate to the pope around the year 1070. Despite the absence of writ ten sources for the founding of the Basilica of St Lawrence, its construction is typically attributed to Prince Vratislav II. The dating of the Vyšehrad-type tiles to the second quar ter of the 12th century rests on the results of the long-term archaeological investigations of Ostrov Monastery (Rich ter et al. 1990,185-195; Sommer 1994, 82-107; Břicháček et al. 2006, 46-62). The age of the tiles used in the monastery Church of St Andrew is again based on the dating of the building in which the floor was laid. However, unlike the case at Vyšehrad, the Vyšehrad-type tiles were not uncov 90 ered in situ at this site and therefore the link to individual construction phases of the church is indirect. The oldest part of the church is dated to the year 1137, when written sources speak of a great fire at the monastery. This date is then also tied to the Vyšehrad-type tiles. The reason this dating cannot be correct is the later type of Romanesque tiles found beneath the foundation of the oldest part of the church (cf. Čiháková 2009,17-18). If tiles already existed on the site when the church was founded, the age of the tiles cannot be inferred from its dating. It is only possible to date a tile using a building if the connection between the two units is clearly demonstrable. It can be assumed that
some of the interpretive steps that led to the dating of the tiles and hence the monastery church itself were incorrectly car ried out. As such, without a revision of the chronology of the Ostrov Monastery buildings, the dating of the Vyšehrad-type tiles to the second quarter of the 12th century in our opinion lacks justification. More recently, a third date has emerged in the discussion about the age of the tiles - the third quarter of the 12th cen tury, derived from the dating of the find from Brozany (Zápo tocký 1992, 189-190, 210-212). The assemblage of randomly found tiles was related to the construction of the basilica at Doksany Monastery, which was probably founded in 1144. The at least partial completion of the basilica is assumed to fall in the third quarter of the 12th century at the earliest, and the dating of the tiles is posited for this same period. Given the lack of solid evidence connecting the find with the Dok sany basilica and the fact that we know of three other build ings in the vicinity dating back to the 12th century at the lat est, we do not consider this dating probable. In the case of sites where the tiles have been recovered in modern archaeological excavations, it is possible that the dating will be refined in the future. As this method of dat ing is usually based on the relative age of individual compo nents, it can be assumed that a broader time interval will be involved. However, in the absence of more solid evidence, a broad but reliably supported time interval would be a clear benefit, a possibility currently seen in Sázava, Stará Boleslav and Žatec. Although the Vyšehrad-type tiles at none of the afore mentioned sites can currently be dated to the last third of the 11th century, in all cases (with the exception of Sezimovo Ústí) these are sites where early medieval settlement activities are documented, often much further into the past. As such, for the time being we do not know of a site whose character would significantly contradict the older dating. The composition of the Vyšehrad-type tiles in a pattern of hexagons interspersed with triangular tiles is
clearly based on Mediterranean patterns, on stone floors of the opus sectile type. Throughout the Middle Ages, we encounter rectangu lar tiles to the greatest extent, while hexagonal tiles occur very sporadically. Vyšehrad-type tiles (especially their pat tern) do not resemble any currently known tiles either in the Czech Republic or in the Central European region, which means that if we shifted their dating towards a younger age, even then we would not be able to reliably incorporate them into the current notion of the development of ceramic tiles in the Middle Ages. Their highly uniform appearance, rela tively broad distribution, and above all the strictly observed method of laying, where both hexagonal and triangular tiles are always documented in all the larger assemblages, may also be an argument for the greater age of the tiles, when the Vyšehrad type may have been the only generally known method of tiling floors in the region. While the search for the creators of Vyšehrad-type floors has thus far been fruitless, they must have been specialists familiar both with Mediterranean floors and the process of ceramic tile production and glazing. We are led to believe that they were foreigners by the use of the high-quality black glaze used on some of the tiles. However, this glaze appears only on the Vyšehrad-type tiles and not on later Romanesque tiles, the production of which is even documented in certain FONTES ARCHAEOLOGICI cases. Glaze was not used in the production of later Roman esque tiles, possibly because this knowledge was not passed down to further
generations of craftsmen. At the same same time, we do not know where these specialists came from. In the Mediterranean area, where opus sectile floors with a pattern similar to the Vyšehrad tiles are documented, ceramic floors were not used. Knowledge of ceramic glazed tiles for the same period is documented from places so dis tant that it is difficult to consider possible connections. The assumption that the creators of the Vyšehrad-type floors must have been hired from remote areas leads us to search for the commissioner(s) of the work. Given the chal lenge of such a task, we would naturally look for them among the rulers. It must have been a person with the sufficient pur view, resources and power, and the situation in the Přemyslid principality had to be favourable enough for more prestigious construction projects to take place. Prince Vratislav II (10611092) or Soběslav I (1125-1140) are most often mentioned in the studied period. Considering the care taken by Vratislav II for many of these sites, which in some cases is documented in written sources, it seems more likely at present that he was the person who commissioned the Vyšehrad-type floors. Again, however, it must be noted that this is not a reliably documented fact, merely an assumption. Given the number of variants (Čiháková - Müller 2020, 124-126) that have recently been identified, it is possible that some of the Vyšehrad-type floors were laid at a later date. We consider the original variant to be the one discovered in the Basilica of St Lawrence at Vyšehrad, i.e. the St Lawrence var iant. Nevertheless,
we do not anticipate a large gap of time between the development of individual variants. While the nature of the sites varies, castle centres pre dominate (they make up more than half of the total number of sites). There are also two monasteries, both of which can be considered important centres of spiritual culture in the given period. While the relationships between the other sites seemed unclear for many years, it now appears that they may have been smaller locations whose significance lay in their location on important transport routes, particularly at fords. This would apply to Brozany, Týnec nad Labem, Přestavlky near Chlumec nad Cidlinou, Kostelec u Křížků and perhaps even the Rotunda of St Wenceslas in the Lesser Quarter of Prague, although here the situation is more complicated due to the location of the building in the middle of the agglom eration. A case that for now falls completely outside these categories is an old find of a single tile with a lion from Sezimovo Ústí, for which the find context is unknown. There is no evidence of early medieval settlement at the site, but since it is probably an impression pulled from an existing tile and not from a mould, it could be a late imitation of a Vyšehrad-type tile. And yet, it is not clear why such a copy would have been made. At the same time, we must bear in mind PRAGENSES - VOLUMEN 50 - PRAGAE 2023 91
that Vyšehrad-type tiles have not been documented outside a sacred building anywhere thus far, and given the nature of the motifs it seems unlikely that they would be found else where. As such, finds of larger numbers of Vyšehrad-type tiles can be considered as proof of the existence of a church in the given location. Thus, specifying the age of the tiles would lead to relatively significant conclusions, especially where further evidence is lacking. The original idea of the Vyšehrad-type floor as a signifi cant whole, where all four motifs regularly alternate in the pattern, does not seem plausible now. If we compare the absolute numbers of individual types of tiles from all loca tions, tiles with a griffin occur about seven times more often than tiles with Emperor Nero, a disparity so great that it could not have occurred by chance. At the same time, two floors have been documented, at Ostrov and in the Rotunda of St Wenceslas in the Lesser Quarter of Prague in which only two motifs - a griffin and a lion - were verifiably used. We believe that this may have been related to the significance of the depiction of Emperor Nero, who is associated with the veneration of St Peter. If we compare the medieval depic tions of this ruler, the evidence from the Early and High Mid dle Ages differs considerably. Although the range of depic tions is broader in the High Middle Ages, in the earlier period we encounter Emperor Nero exclusively in narrative scenes from the life of St Peter. This primarily involves a confronta tion with Simon Magus, or the execution of the saint, which
legend says the emperor ordered. It is possible that the Nero tiles are related to the veneration of St Peter, although we cannot find this connection in the dedication of the build ings in which these tiles were used. If we consider only the variant with the inscription NERO as a tile with Nero, and not the tile with the image of the ruler without the inscrip tion, then there are only five buildings in which these tiles were used, i.e. at Vyšehrad, Stary Plzenec, Sázava, Žatec and Čáslav. The meaning of the lion and griffin motifs is ambiv alent; in the case of the sphinx it can be assumed that it is not actually a sphinx. However, we are not yet able to inter pret the motif in any other way (the earlier idea of a struggle between good and evil on the floor is now dated). At the same time, the view that the four motifs on the floor regularly alternate has persisted since the period of the earliest finds, but given the numbers of individual tiles stated above, this idea is no longer tenable. Even in the publi cation of the in situ floor find from the eponymous Vyšehrad, it is clearly stated that the surfaces of the floor in individual parts of the temple differed. It is therefore necessary to aban don the idea of the Vyšehrad-type floor as a uniform sur face covering the entire floor of the church and admit that it could have been individual, separate fields as we know them from the Mediterranean opus sectile floors, although significantly simpler and with larger continuous surfaces of one type of tile. Finds of ‘geometric’ relief tiles documented at Vyšehrad,
Ostrov, Sázava, Stará Boleslav, Stará Plzen and Žatec Žižkovo náměstí are related to this. These are tiles in the shape of a rectangle, triangle and hexagon, but all sides are either convexly or concavely curved so that they can be fit ted together to create a smooth spherical pattern. As previ ously indicated by I. Boháčová (2003, 206), we believe that this type of tiling may be a fixed part of some Vyšehrad-type floors. Although they were not discovered in situ anywhere, they are found in the same contexts as the Vyšehrad-type tiles and they have never been found anywhere separately. If we find the inspiration behind the Vyšehrad-type tiles in Mediterranean floors, then alternating different ways of con necting the tiles to each other is quite common. Patterns fill individual fields, which can be separated from each other by strips of rectangular tiles. If our assumption is correct, the production and laying of Vyšehrad-type tiles appears to be even more demanding than before. While it is currently not possible to reliably determine the age and origin of the Vyšehrad-type tiles, dating the old est finds to the reign of Prince Vratislav II does not, in our view, negate any of the arguments presented earlier. We see the possibilities of solving this issue mainly in an evalua tion of the contexts of the tiles obtained by modern archae ological research and where there is still the possibility of dating to an even broader time interval. As recent surpris ing finds have also shown, i.e. the discovery of the Rotunda of St Wenceslas in the Lesser Quarter of Prague in 2004
and the discovery of a tile with a griffin in Týnec nad Labem in 2020, further expansion of the source inventory cannot be ruled out in the future. |
