Summaries Ladislav Kudrna The underground in 1981-1986 While the second half of the 1970s represents the peak, the in tegrative phase of the Czech underground, its starry hour, so to speak, when it became the impetus for the creation of Charter 77, the first half of the 1980s undoubtedly represents its most difficult period, bringing with it systematic persecution and associated atomisation. At the beginning of the 1980s, the communist re gime launched a second campaign against the underground. Until the mid-1980s, its leaders were imprisoned or exiled abroad as part of the nationwide “Asanace” action. František Stárek Čuňas First trial against Vokno magazine The crackdown by the authorities against Vokno magazine in 1981 was another major “pogrom” against the underground community in Czechoslovakia. Dozens of house searches and hundreds of forced testimonies were to simultaneously intimidate the entire underground community. 186

Reception of the underground movement in Information on Charter 77 bulletin in the years 1982-1985 The study Between “Asanace” Action and Perestroika. Reception of the Underground Movement in Information on Charter 77 Bulletin in the Years 1982-1985 follows the development of the relationship between the underground movement and other wings of Charter 77, as manifested in the leading dissident sam izdat. The analysis concludes that this relationship changed significantly during this period. Although the various social groups of Charter 77 began to converge in the face of increasing repression, at the same time the underground temporarily with drew from the scene due to the wave of forced emigration and criminalization. As a result, Charter 77 began to dedicate itself to the defense of other persecuted groups, typically the musical New Wave. After the revival of the former underground, symbol ized by the relaunch of the magazine Vokno in 1985, repressed values and personal conflicts arose between the underground and the culturally conservative groups in Charter 77. Jan Cholínský Czech Underground in Exile (1981-1989) Between 1978 and 1984, the Czechoslovak communist secret po lice (StB) carried out a persecution operation called ASANACE. It used illegal harassment (ranging from threats to physical vio lence) to force dozens of people who had signed the Charter 77 human rights declaration to leave their homeland. Among those 187
expelled were many representatives (or entire families with chil dren) of the Czech underground subculture, who formed their own “diaspora” in the free world. This text attempts to summa rize their joint activities in the free world, except for the first part, which describes the domestic situation of the persecuted underground community. The second part recalls the festivals organized by Karel “Charlie” Soukup near the town of Villé in France, the connection between the exiled “underground man” and the leader of the Czech liberal-left exile Pavel Tigrid, the settlement of many representatives of the movement in Vienna and their efforts to support their friends in their homeland. The third part is a kaleidoscope of the various activities of the Czech underground in the West, including the release of music albums and the organization of a benefit concert in New York in Janu ary 1989 for the leader of the Czech underground, Ivan Martin Jirous, who had been imprisoned by the communist regime. The fourth part comments on the furore over Jan Pelc’s text “Chil dren of Paradise” (about the life of a group of Czech antisocial youths), published in 1984 in the most widely circulated Czech exile magazine, Svědectví, which many mistakenly identified with the underground. In the conclusion, the author states that Czech representatives of the underground, expelled from their homeland by the criminal communist regime, managed to form a cohesive group in the Western countries, developing diverse activities and maintaining contact with home country. 188
Barbara Bothová Popular music in Hungary in the second half of the 20th century The central theme of this text is popular music in Hungary in the second half of the 20th century. The so-called “kônnyúzene” included both officially promoted music and later, from the 1970s, rock music. As a part of culture, it was controlled by the Hungar ian Socialist Workers’ Party, which had to ensure that musical production had the right educational character. The text briefly introduces selected institutions founded in the 1950s for this very purpose. The second part focuses on the so-called golden era of Hungarian rock and gives a brief overview of selected important rock bands of the second half of the 20th century. Zdeněk R. Nešpor Folk and the (musical) underground a journey there and back again One of the peculiarities of modern Czech popular culture is the long-lasting popularity of folk music from the 1960s to the early 1990s, when it even became part of the mainstream for a time. The author shows that the “in-between period” of the 1970s was filled by an externally enforced but culturally highly fruitful symbiosis of folk and underground. Although essen tially accidental and short-lived, it produced one of the most significant artistic manifestations of modern Czech folk culture, thanks to its authentic combination of socio-cultural values with personal experience and community life. Its value transcends Czech culture. Among the most important representatives of the 189
folk-underground synthesis, the author mentions the singer songwriters Sváťa (Svatopluk) Karásek, Charlie (Karel) Soukup and Dáša (Dagmar) Vokatá, or the groups DG 307 (frontman Pavel Zajíček) and The Hever and Vazelína Band (frontman Miroslav “Skalák” Skalický). Jan Blüml On the question of rock fan clubs in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s The paper focuses on the activities of two fan clubs that operated in the Brno scene in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s. The first was The Beatles fan club, which attempted to exist legally through evasive maneuvers, and the second was the Frank Zappa fan club, which existed outside the official structures and regula tions. The paper presents the activities of both clubs and their social backgrounds. Petra Veselá Rituals of the body and ambivalence Anthropological Aspects of Real Socialism In the early 1980s, the ideal of middle-class consumerism came to the fore. Television series function as a method of transmitting ideology. Rituals of the body, Spartakiade and sport in general point to how “power” penetrates the body (Foucault). Material ism is also a result of Marx’s ideology, which brings into society the „unmasking“ of all those human dimensions that Marx be lieved would interfere with man’s creative working potential. The 190
result is the simulacrum, the total removal of human semantics where ideology is an empty form. The numerous activities of the underground of the time led to the filling of the void. The division of the DG 307 group is paradigmatic. Typical of this period is the search for the “lost dimension of being”, then the struggle for public space and the reconstruction of identity. It is no longer a “liminal extreme underground”, but ambivalence is characteristic. This is due to the fact that the members of the underground became an important part of dissent, but at the same time they were also an element of power. The boundary they were operating on was as fragile as the ambivalence given by the context: whereas in a democratic society the dynamics of resistance appeal to the objectivity of the state and demand an answer, here it was clear from the outset that no dialogue was possible. The relationship to the state is absolutely crucial because it creates unconditional dependence on the one hand and hopelessness and despair on the other. This ambivalent relationship is set up as a “double relation” (Bateson), that is, a contradictory, unresolvable situ ation. This tells us something significant about what people in the underground were experiencing during this period and what impact this situation had on their psyche, especially when it is clear that emotions arise as a result of attitudes and relationships in society, i.e., as a cultural product. 191 |
