The main reason to dig at the site of the for mer death camp was the planned construction of a new museum and transformation of the area’s memorial site. The excavations were the first to uncover a large part of a death camp’s layout using modern archaeologicaltechniques, revealing details such as the gas chambers and the path leading to them. In the process, tens of thousands of objects were brought to the surface. At the request of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), NIOD brought together an interdisciplinary group of researchers to con tribute to a collection of scholarly articles and a popular scientific book highlighting the archaeological excavations from various perspectives.
