Abstract:From the 1630s onwards, enamel painting enjoyed considerable success in the courts of Europe. Its qualities, precision of design, variety of colour shades, inalterability of colours, resistance to light and humidity, were alluring. It renewed the decoration of small luxury objects, such as portrait boxes, mirrors, watches, jewellery, used for sentimental presents or official gifts. Portraits, flower decorations, historical scenes are part of a repertoire appreciated by the clientele. The archives and preserved pieces give a glimpse of the spread of this fashion among the European aristocracy and the activity of enamel painters in Blois, Paris, London and Geneva.
