When mentioning his name, most people probably picture him with his typical pith helmet and associate him with his travels to Africa. Holub’s popularity is huge, and it is still used by various art and advertising projects, thus further shaping, and distorting the traveller’s image which has become almost cult like. An example of this is an advertisement for the Pilsner Urquell Brewery that the world-famous beer maker used in order to launch a new 2007 marketing campaign. In the ad, Holub is presented as an adventurer who is driven by his inner desire for knowledge. When he encounters members of a hostile African ethnic group, he is able to prevent bloodshed and, thanks to his drive to “know the true essence”, finds common ground with their leader. The mes sage of the advertisement is to bring the right things to unknown territories. In Holub’s case, it is a crate with twelve-degree Pilsner Urquell beers that are hiding the real treasure. Naturally, the advertisement for the Pilsner Urquell Brewery is, despite its great effort to be authentic, a myth fulfilling the aim of selling the advertised goods. It works with widely shared, albeit superficial information on the basis of which Holub is mostly seen as a courageous and successful man with a strong sense of pat riotism. The ad apparently does not presuppose more detailed knowledge from the viewers, in the light of which Holub can also be considered as a highly double-edged and complicated person whose success is problematic at the very least. Other examples from film and literature would confirm that the legacy of Emil Holub is still very much alive and that his char acter appears in various, quite different, and often problematic, contexts. Our book does not aim to give a comprehensive view of the traveller’s personality throughout his life, especially since there already exists a critical and comprehensive monograph by Martin Šámal Emil Holub: cestovatel, etnograf, sběratel (Emil Holub: Traveller - Ethnographer - Collector) published in Prague 2013. It rather focuses on four fundamental topics. They make it possible to understand Holub’s importance in the world of today and at the same time touch on some more general contemporary questions, that are related, among other things, to the presentation of ethno graphic and art collections, to the discussion of decolonization of museums, orto the shaping process of a national identity. 141 SUMMARY Martin Šámaľs introductory chapter is devoted to Holub’s travels to Africa. He shows the traveller’s original ideals, plans, and goals and confronts them with the achieved results, which he then evaluates. The second chapter by Ondřej Crhák deals with Holub’s activities in the context of contemporary colonialism. He takes a critical look at some of Holub’s actions and poses a question: “How do we perceive these today?” Petr Valenta is the author of the third part. He focuses on Holub’s collections, especially the ethnographic collection in the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African, and American Cultures in Prague and deals with the beginnings and contents of Holub’s collection. The last chapter by Tomáš Winter describes and interprets Holub’s exhibitions, that were used to present the material collected by the traveller. The aim of the publication is to start a discussion that will lead to a better understanding of Holub’s legacy at present time. It strives to ensure that the character of Emil Holub is not surrounded by fiction, myths, and ideologically driven content, but that it emerges in its complexity, including both positive and negative sides.
