Dostupné z www.europeansineastafrica.co.uk RÉSUMÉ Bedřich Machulka (1875-1954), though rather unfamiliar among the general public, was a prolific czech traveler, who undertook his african voyages in the first half of the 20th centu ry. Machulka was the first czech professional organizer of hunting expeditions in East Africa. The main area of his activity was firstly Sudan and after few years he expanted his own bussi nes to Kongo, Uganda and Kenya. From 1929 he was employed in service of the House of Schwarzenberg, namely Adolf Schwarzenberg, for whom he organized some of his hunting expeditions. In 1935 he served as a supervisor over Schwarzenberg’s farm Mpala near Nanyuki. As a record ofhis hunting expeditions he kept diaries, five of which, from years 1930-1935, are presented in this edition. They are deposited in the Archives of Náprstek Museum as a part ofMachulka’s estate. The journals consist of daily records both from days ofhis African travels and hunting expeditions as well
as the days that were spent in towns (e.g. Khartum, Nairobi etc.) where the next expedition was being planned. First entries would be written in the days he was leaving Prague and the consequent regular records would last all the time until he returned back to Czechoslovakia. Briefness, almost curtness are the prevailing features of Machulka’s journals, especially in the later years. In the diaries the author s interests are stron gly reflected, which laid mainly in studying the african landscape, flora and fauna. His focus on the indigenous people and their culture was of a much lesser extent. Machulka s journals show his apparent passion for hunting accompanied by the effort he put into preserving the evidence of it in form of hunting trophys. The diaries were kept primarily for the purpose of preserving scientific knowledge of the kontinent s nature, only secondarily in order to keep memory ofhis travels. Formally, they are a product of fusion of Machulka’s Czech roots and Czech culture on one side and the British influence in East Afrika on the other, which the author to a large extent adapted to. Czech records in the journals are interspersed with English (but also Swahili and other) terms, czech-language records are inscribed in ajournai pre-prin ted in English. Machulka’s diaries may besides etnographic and natural science studies serve for research of period attitude of Europeans to and their relations with the African continent, including the European high-society hunting culture as a component of the culture of free time. The material may be of help to experts
on every-day life of a European in Africa during the third decade ofthe 20th century. It has a lot to say about the author’s personality, capabilities, values or ambitions as well as inevitable disilusions, making it a valuable source for studying social context of that period. 403
