Zusammenfassung: | Notebook from China (1987): In an interesting documentary, director Jorgen Leth rides the Chinese rail system through 6,000 miles of cities, towns, and countryside with both nature and human activity highlighted. Noodle-makers and jugglers, fishmongers and women cyclists, performers and their audiences are all poetically and imaginatively noted and photographed. The only noticeable omission is any information on the images that pass so evocatively in front of the camera. [All Movie Guide] Moments of Play (1986): Jorgen Leth continues his illustrious career as a poet-filmmaker with "Moment of Play", which is, ultimately, a tribute to homo ludens, Latin for such members of the human race who have, regardless of age, race or social standing, retained the spirit of play in their various endeavors ... Undoubtedly, Leth did extensive research and interviewing before shooting in New York, California, Bali, Haiti, Brazil, Denmark and China, but his film comes through as sheer poetry-in-motion. The narration of brief poetic statements emulate the feelings of each player caught by the camera — masked dancers in Bali, pickup basketball players in Harlem, a former tennis champ (who now uses his tennis ball to make art), a six-year old boy improvising with flawless technique and original flair at a piano, a bullfighter rehearsing with a decoy toro and kids fishing with bow and arrow on the Amazon. Antoinio Carlos Jobim’s score enhances the general joy of (these moments of play). [Variety] |
