Zusammenfassung:This sprawling Indian classic from 1960 is a punishing three hours 20 minutes, not including interval. It doesn't have the overtly nationalist themes of the 1957 Bollywood epic "Mother India"; the emphasis is rather on the timeless tragedy of forbidden love. The 16th-century emperor Akbar fatefully quarrels with his son Prince Salim over Salim's love for maidservant and court dancer Anarkali. There are some uproarious crowd scenes, musical numbers and set pieces, including Salim's nail-biting public execution sequence. It looks a bit creaky and elderly sometimes, but Karimuddin Asif tells his story with gusto. [film.guardian.co.uk]
