Summary:Renowned Indian cinematographer Santosh Sivan makes his directorial debut with "The Terrorist", a powerhouse film about the lengths people go to in the name of revolution. It tells the story of a 20-year-old female revolutionary named Malli who is selected by her coevals to assassinate a powerful figure. With her consent comes the knowledge that she will die, since the plot involves her being strapped with explosives to be detonated while she shakes the intended victim's hand. Although inspired in part by the 1991 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Sivan makes a brilliant directorial choice in not revealing the nature of the struggle Malli is engaged in. In addition, the figure she is supposed to assassinate is never named. So instead of getting bogged down in the morality or immorality of the cause or the minutiae of history, viewers are swept up by a very dramatic and involving depiction of one woman's moral choice.
