Abstract:The architectural history of the Johanneskapelle (Chapel of St. John) is always viewed in connection with Burg Grauscharn, a medieval castle presumed to have been close to the parish church, even though there is no evidence to confirm this assumption. The construction of the chapel, located in the small village of Pürgg in Styria, dates back to some time between the year 1100 and the late twelfth century, depending on the interpretation of the donors depicted in the Romanesque murals. The chapel takes the widespread form of a hall with a recessed chancel. While the nave is very simple in its appearance – with a beamed ceiling, three arched windows on the two side walls and a gallery on the west side – the chancel features architectural accents in the form of graduated blind arcades and a domed vault. Investigations into the stratigraphy of the architectural elements have established that the roof beam, an integral component of the finished common rafter roof, was part of the original building; the dendrochronological analysis of these beams therefore determines the period in which the chapel was constructed. The dendro-date of around 1125, which is in keeping with the masonry structure, shows that the artistic decorations inside the chapel are to be viewed in isolation from its construction.
