| Abstract: | As of around the mid-1970s an unprecedented increase in the number of churches raised in Poland occurred, the phenomenon climaxing in the 1980s. The intensified construction efforts were accompanied by the development of architectural criticism. It was conducted by designers, artists, investors, and theoreticians. The paper identifies the major participants of the debate going on throughout the last decade of Communist Poland focused on the churches designed and raised at the time; it discusses key practices and theoretical aspects of designing and erecting churches tackled by them, such as: approach to tradition, quality of sacral art, basic principles of designing churches, and foreign inspirations. |
