| Abstract: | Published on the occasion of the museum's 125th anniversary, the 'Carnegie Museum of Art Collection Handbook' features images of more than 200 works from the collection and essays by museum staff, past and present, that reveal the stories behind their creation and acquisition. Color images of previously unpublished archival materials trace the history of the museum from the late 19th century, when founder Andrew Carnegie established the Carnegie Institute and inaugurated the Carnegie International exhibition series, with the aim of bringing the "Old Masters of tomorrow" to Pittsburgh in the present day. This updated guide to the museum's collection features works that will be well known to museum visitors and more recent acquisitions that lay the groundwork for another century of pioneering exhibitions |
