Zusammenfassung: | This comparative study explores three key cultural and political spheres - the Latin west, Byzantium and the Islamic world from Central Asia to the Atlantic - roughly from the emergence of Islam to the fall of Constantinople. These spheres drew on a shared pool of late antique Mediterranean culture, philosophy and science, and they had monotheism and historical antecedents in common. Yet where exactly political and spiritual power lay, and how it was exercised, differed. This book focuses on power dynamics and resource-allocation among ruling elites; the legitimisation of power and property with the aid of religion; and on rulers' interactions with local elites and societies. Offering the reader route-maps towards navigating each sphere and grasping the fundamentals of its political culture, this set of parallel studies offers a timely and much needed framework for comparing the societies surrounding the medieval Mediterranean |

Offering the reader route-maps towards navigating each sphere and grasping the fundamentals of its political culture, this set of parallel studies offers a timely and much needed framework for comparing the societies surrounding the medieval Mediterranean Geschichte 700-1500 gnd rswk-swf Political culture Civilization, Medieval Comparative government Politische Kultur (DE-588)4046540-8 gnd rswk-swf Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 gnd rswk-swf Europe / Politics and government / 476-1492 Islamic countries / Politics and government Byzantine Empire / Politics and government Südeuropa (DE-588)4078023-5 gnd rswk-swf Byzantinisches Reich (DE-588)4009256-2 gnd rswk-swf Mitteleuropa (DE-588)4039677-0 gnd rswk-swf Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Westeuropa (DE-588)4079215-8 g Südeuropa (DE-588)4078023-5 g Mitteleuropa (DE-588)4039677-0 g Byzantinisches Reich (DE-588)4009256-2 g Islam (DE-588)4027743-4 s Politische Kultur (DE-588)4046540-8 s Geschichte 700-1500 z DE-604 Holmes, Catherine 1968- (DE-588)132329441 edt Shepard, Jonathan 1948- (DE-588)131695134 edt Steenbergen, Jo van 1975- (DE-588)142721379 edt Weiler, Björn K.
