D H Lawrence is no longer censored, but he is still on trial - and we are still unsure what the verdict should be, or even how to describe him. History has remembered him, and not always flatteringly, as a nostalgic modernist, a sexual liberator, a revolutionary, a conservative, and a sceptic who told us not to look in his novels for ‘the old stable ego’, yet pioneered the genre we now know as autofiction. But where is the real Lawrence in all of this, and how ֊ one hundred years after the publication of Women in Love - can we hear, above all the noise, what he has to tell usľ Tracing his footsteps through the pages of his lesser known work, Frances Wilson rediscovers the first working-class voice in English prose, and suggests that the focus on his novels has distracted attention from his real strength as a writer. In a triptych of biographical tales based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, Burning Man follows Lawrence through the decade which found him lost in a dark wood in the middle of his life. Beginning with the burning of The Rainbow in 1915, we move from the Inferno of the Great War, through to Purgatorial Italy and into the Paradisal plains of New Mexico. The Lawrence who emerges from this epic journey is a contradictory, courageous and often comic fugitive, careering around a world in the grip of apocalypse. By giving major roles to those figures who usually are considered minor, Wilson foregrounds Lawrence’s troubled relationships with the enigmatic poet H.D., the charming conman Maurice Magnus, and the New Age Beatrice, Mabel Dodge Luhan. ‘Art for my sake’ he said, and
Lawrence’s middle years, Wilson shows, were his most overlooked work of art.
