In Common Understandings, Poetic Confusion, William N. West proposes a new account of the kind of participatory entertainment expected by actors and audiences during the careers of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. West finds surprising descriptions of these theatrical experiences in the figurative ways of speaking with which early modern players and playgoers likened playing and playgoing to more familiar habits—including under standing, confusion, occupation, eating, and fighting. These early modern words and ways of speaking differ subtly and significantly from how they are used today—as does the cat egory of theater itself. Playing was not confined to the stage but filled the playhouse and beyond, embracing audiences and performers in collaborative experiences that did not belong to anyone alone but to the assembled crowd in common. What emerged in playing was a thinking and feeling distributed across otherwise distinct persons and times. Thrown apples, smashed bottles of beer, and lumbering bears—these and more gave verbal shape to the physical interactions between players and playgoers, creating circuits of production, consumption, and transformation.
