TRANSPORT OF RIGA 100 YEARS AGO Summary This volume is dedicated to transportation in the city of Riga from the last decades of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. This was the era when the only means of city land transport dating from theMiddle Ages - horse-drawn cart, and sailing ships at sea were first replaced by steam-powered vehicles, and later, in the early 20th century, emerged electric trams and cars with internal combustion engines. Following the example of Western European cities, Riga, a growing city at that time, was one of the first in the Russian Empire to see these new, modern means of transport. Old postcards and photographs show us what these new and old vehicles were like. A page of explanatory text attached to each illustration provides the reader with concise information about each of these vehicles and indicates when they appeared in Riga and the time of their disappearance. The book consists of five chapters. The first chapter views the private vehicles of the townspeople used by one person or several people. The first vehicle to carry a human both a hundred years ago and today remains a pram. The shape and construction of prams have evolved through the years. To transport small loads, push handcarts were used, however, they have not survived to this day. In winter, prams and handcarts were replaced by sledges for transporting children, as well as small bundles. At the end of the 19th century, the first and largest bicycle factory of the Russian Empire was located in Riga ֊ the bicycle factory of Alexander Leutner. These individual
means of transportation won the popularity among the townspeople. In the city streets, horsemen were no longer seen, with an exception of army cavalry or some police officers. Families of wealthy townspeople made extensive use of personal carriages, both closed and in summer - open with a coachman on the coach-box. If everyone’s first vehicle was a pram, then the last vehicle was a horse-drawn carriage hearse. The design and construction of hearses at that time was diverse. The second chapter of the book is dedicated to public transport of the city. From the Middle Ages, horse-drawn cabs were used as a means of city transport. Horse-drawn cabs or ormaņi could belong to two types - light cabs, which carried only people, and carters to transport loads (merchandise and building materials). In summer, townspeople took carriages, while in winter they went about in sleighs. At the beginning of the 20th century, the horse mail delivery created in the 17th century was still in use, albeit as a relic. To order, it also made trips in the immediate vicinity of Riga. The omnibus created in Riga at the late 19th century a two-horse-drawn carriage-type eleven-seater was still used in the beginning of the 20th century for transporting passengers in the suburbs, if the electric tram lines had not yet been built to the intended destination. In the last decades of the 19th century, the omnibus in the city centre was replaced by a horse-drawn tram. In 1901, it was replaced by an electric tram. By 1913, already eight tram lines operated in Riga, radially connecting the city 254
centre - the Old Town with the suburbs. River boats - small steamers - played an important role in urban traffic during the period under review. As the city lacked the much-needed bridges over the Daugava River, they were replaced by small river steamers, which moved people across the river. River boats also provided transportation of passengers in suburban waters - the Daugava and Lielupe Rivers, as well as Lake Ķīšezers. In winter, when the Daugava froze over, two-seat sleighs pushed by people, the so-called butes (Butte), were used to transport passengers. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first motorcars were involved in moving people across the Daugava River. The third chapter introduces readers to the beginning of the automotive era in Riga (1901-1913). At that time, there were two automotive companies operating in Riga, which were among the first in the Russian Empire. In 1901, A. Leutners bicycle factory began to assemble passenger cars, as well as to assemble to order the lorries for some foreign car factories. The Russian-Baltic Railway Carriage Factory in Riga also opened a car factory in 1909 as a side industry. It produced both cars and lorries, and carried out orders from the Russian Ministry of War. In the old postcards, we can view the cars and lorries of that time and the first buses, all made in Riga. The fourth chapter of the book describes the vehicles that transported the inhabitants of Riga to the towns in western and eastern parts of Latvia. This long-distance transport was carried out by trains and sea steamers. The Riga railway junction
consisted oí six lines: RigaDaugavpils (opened in 1861), Riga-Jelgava (1872), Riga-Mīlgrāvis (1872), Riga-Bolderāja (1873), Riga-Tukums (1877), Riga-Pskov (1889). Initially, all these lines terminated in the territory of Latvia, but later they were gradually extended and connected to the railway network of the Russian Empire and linked Riga not only with the cities of inner Russia, but also with Western Europe. The book characterises the railway rolling stock of that time locomotives and railway carriages, as well as stations and railway bridges. The second type of long-distance traffic was sea steamer fines. Firstly, the chapter views the port of Riga. Its main function was to service cargo ships. During the described period, several sea steamer passenger and cargo transportation lines were established between Russian and foreign ports, ensuring regular passenger transportation. The old postcards display the passenger steamers of that period calling at the port of Riga. The final - fifth chapter of this book is dedicated to the early 20th century fantasies and visions of the future metropolitan traffic. During this time, the increased intensity of public transport began to exceed the capacity of streets created in previous centuries. It was no longer possible to move people quickly from the city centre to the suburbs and vice versa. It was necessary to create new vehicles, new modes of transport. This was envisaged by moving traffic over the crowded city streets, for example, building overpasses with cable cars. There was also a vision to use airships and balloons in the
future city traffic. These visions also appear on postcards - not only in Riga, but also in other cities of that time. 255
