EARLY MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT FROM MARCA SFĂRĂUAŞI (SĂLAJ COUNTY) Archaeological contributions to the knowledge of fast wheel made pottery from the Sylvanian Basin (Abstract) The locality of Marca (Marca commune, Sălaj County) is located in the western part of Sălaj county, at the foot of the Plopiş/Şes Mountains, on the middle course of the Barcău Valley. The site from Marca Sfărăuaş I was identified on the left side of the Zalău-Oradea road, on a terrace (second terrace) on the right bank of the Barcău River, at the base of Palis Hill, above the floodplain. The surface exploration of the site from Marca Sfărăuaş I took place in 2012 when preventive archaeological excavations were carried out to save the archaeological vestiges and free the archaeological load, establish the stratigraphy of the site and collect as much information about the habitat type as possible. The archaeological research team consisted of D. Băcueţ-Crişan (head of the archaeological team), I. Bejinariu and D. Culic (members of the archaeological team, all from the History and Art County Museum in Zalău). During the archaeological excavation, 59 archaeological features were registered, but after sectioning, feature C. 54 turned out to be a modern landfill. Out of the 58 archaeological features, four features are prehistoric (C. 1,C. 2, C. 53, C. 59 belong to the Bronze Age) while the remaining 54 archaeological features belong to the early Middle Ages. The preventive archaeological excavation was performed through the opening of several archaeological research units, labeled S. 1/2012, S. 11/2012, S.
III/2012, S. IV/2012, S. V/2012, and S. VI/2012. No archaeological features was discovered in the archaeological research units labeled S. 1/2012, S. 11/2012, and S. III/2012. Such features were only discovered in research units S. IV/2012, S. V/2012, and S. VI/2012. Several types of early medieval archaeological features were discovered: dwellings, household annexes, openair fire installations, household refuse pits and postholes. Stas*՜ t.J·. t,iek N’.Ji· ■ =n
98 The vegetal layer was removed by machine and then manual excavation was employed for the research of the archaeological features. From a stratigraphic perspective, we have noted the following succession: plowed gray humus, deposition of brown clay, layer of slit-like gray soil, and yellowish clay that was sterile from an archaeological perspective. The discovered archaeological material was extremely interesting and diverse. Pottery was the most often found type of artifact among the discoveries here. The discovered pottery had been modeled through a combination of several techniques: by hand, on the slow-turning potters' wheel, and on the fast-turning potters' wheel. Besides pottery, specialists have also discovered other types of artifacts, made of diverse materials: metal artifacts (made of iron and bronze), clay artifacts, and stone artifacts. The presence of a significant quantity of vessels made at the fast wheel is noteworthy at the settlement from Marca Sfărăuaş I. They have the same characteristics (formal and technological) as the pottery (oxidized burn) made at the fast wheel identified in the northwestern part of Romania, conventionally called the Lazuri-Nuşfalău type ceramics. We argued on other occasions that within the northwestern part of Romania, there are many similarities between the pottery made on fast wheel from Marca Sfărăuaş I, Nuşfalău Ţigoiul lui Benedek and the one from Lazuri Lubi tag. The accumulation of the discoveries of such ceramic vessels in the respective area (especially in the Sylvanian Basin indicates the existence of a
"trenď'/tradition in pottery with specific legacies from late antiquity. Regarding the dating of the remains from the Marca Sfărăuaş I, the formal characteristics of the ceramic vessels (especially of pottery made on fast wheel), of some metal artefacts and the analogies found (especially in discoveries dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries) indicates a similar inhabitation timeline. Additionally, the C14 analyzes performed at the beginning of 2020 indicated the period between the years 662-776 AD as absolute dating of the site from Marca Sfărăuaş I. This data confirms the chronological classification proposed by us on other occasions. Early medieval pottery made on the fast wheel discovered in northwestern Romania arose the interest of the Romanian scientific world and beyond. The formal, technical, and technological characteristics are very close to the ceramic models of the late antique tradition. Archaeological excavations in the northwestern part of Romania (especially in the Sylvanian Basin) have not yet provided sufficient data to clarify the mechanism/ mechanisms by which this technological knowledge was transmitted from late antiquity to the early Middle Ages, therefore further research is needed to clarify this issue. A first argument for the existence of local production (of pottery made at the fast wheel) in the northwestern part of Romania (implicitly also within the Sylvanian Basin), was offered by the results of the analyses (XRF and FTIR type) performed in 2018 on the ceramics from the settlement from Nuşfalău Ţigoiul lui Benedek, confirming older
hypotheses regarding the existence in the northwest of Romania of a centre/centres of production and distribution of pottery made at the fast wheel of late antique tradition. Of course, the chronology of the sites from which the Lazuri-Nuşfalău type pottery comes was based on the analogies/parallels found in various areas and cultural environments. The formal/structural similarities with the ceramic batch from the pottery kiln from Sighişoara Dealul Viilor with positive characteristics of late antique tradition suggest the contemporaneity of the two potteries. In order to obtain more concrete benchmarks about the chronological stage, C 14 analyses were performed at Marca Sfărăuaş I (analyses performed in 2020).
99 Datings were made with C 14 for the settlement from Nuşfalău Ţigoiul lui Benedek in 2020 to complete the chronological data. The obtained absolute chronology data are: • for Marca Sfărăuaş I: 662-776 AD. • for Nuşfalău Ţigoiul lui Benedek: 669-776 AD. We are aware that the number of analyses of this kind is low (for now) and the results obtained do not fully solve the chronology of these vestiges. However, after many debates within the scientific literature, we have absolute dates that (at least at this date) confirm the hypotheses formulated for a long time (in Romanian literature) regarding the earlier beginning (in the second half of the 7th century) of some settlements (from the Sylvanian Basin) belonging to the horizon of the Lazuri-Nuşfalău type ceramic discoveries, horizon to which the site from Marca Sfărăuaş I belongs too.
