| adam_text | ON THE WAVES OF HISTORY: THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF CZECH HISTORIOGRAPHY The collection of twenty-two studies, entitled On the Waves ofHistory, is a follow-up to a book published in 2007 under the tide Histori ography between Science and Politics. The present volume is, however, conceived differently. Much more than insights into the past of historiography, there are texts of a methodological and program matic nature. This is because even more than twenty years after the Czech Historians’ Congress in Hradec Králové, the author is troubled by the present and future of Czech historiography. Much more than not dealing with one’s own past, however, he is inter ested today whether Czech historiography still has a future, and if so, what nature this future will be. Much has changed in the years since the Hradec Králové Congress. The number of educated his torians increased almost exponentially, which naturally led to the fact that Czech historiography took a wide stance, but qualitatively rather stagnated and suffered from fragmentation. The concepts and programs are no longer talked about at all today, and historiog raphy is turning into a delta, which sometimes searches in vain for a way to the seas of world history. Many have published their mon ographs in English, German or French, but has anyone read them at all, do they have any influence on non-Bohemical research? The author is rather sceptical in this regard, Bohémica non leguntur, even if they are not written in Czech. Unfortunately, with the gigantic development of the number of universities and the increase
in the number of people who appear as historians in the media, the quality of education has declined rapidly. The craft in the form of a histor ical seminar, which professionally shapes the historian’s thinking and his research workshop, has disappeared from many universities. But this is precisely the reason why today members of various gen erations of historians cannot find common ground between each other. In a certain respect, the institute of critical review, which had already faded twenty years ago, has almost completely disappeared.
332 NA VLNÁCH DĚJIN Many believe that it is enough to write for narrow, intellectually close self-affirming fraternities that quote each other, confer with each other, slap each other on the back, and award grants to each other. It is certainly not true only for historiography. Science thus seems to produce much-coveted points, shows worldliness and orig inality, but in reality in many respects it ceases to be what it should be above all: open science, accessible not only to a narrow class of individuals dependent on fluctuations in the arbitrariness of poli ticians or on the contrary on the emergence of new generations or new fraternities that seize power and, when announcing new trends, replace the old fraternities that felt so worldly. The texts incorporated into the book On the Waves ofHistory were written over a long period of more than twenty years from 1995 to 2019. Some are intertwined with the same concept or idea, while others are somewhat isolated. Many also reflect the author’s medi evalist research, and historiographical texts were created against the background of analytical research into medieval reality. Nodi has an inner connection to many of the texts some of which arose in a feverish hurry, others had vague outlines in his mind for several years before they got a definitive form. The book is divided into four parts. The first ofwhich is devoted to methodological reflections on some problems of Hussite research, the second contains considerations of a methodological nature, i.e. the echoes of the phase ofhistorical research when the historian must stop
internally and realize how to proceed. The third part contains texts reflecting the state of historical knowledge, texts of a programmatic nature and considerations concerning various forms of historical memory. The last part consists ofbiographical studies on prominent European historians, supplemented by two obituaries of men respect ed by the author and seriously lacking in historiography in his view. The author reflects what a masculine image of the history of Czech historiography these twenty-two texts evoke. For the period up to 1948, this is understandable, because historiography was almost entirely reserved for men. Even in later years, however, women advanced only slowly as historians. A more significant breakthrough did not occur until November 89, although to this day female historians are gaining their place in the masculine world of historians with great difficulty.
