Przypadek wyborów do płockiej rady miasta . 205 SUMMARY Cleveland Norman, undoubtedly one the greatest Gutenberg experts, has dedicated a special chapter of his monumantal work on the copies of the Bible („The 500-th Anniversary Pictorial Census of the Gutenberg Bible”) to that preserved at Pepiin. Entitled „The Pelplin Bible Saga”, it tells the story of the Pelplin copy together with its adventures after the outbreak of World War II. Referring to Norman’s story, the author describes the Pelplin copy and shows its particular importance in regard to other copies, resulting among others from the preservation on leaf 46r in the first volume of the trace of an overturned type, the specific execution of the rubrics and of the original XVth century cover signed by the bookbinder. In the writer’s opinion, bishop Mikołaj Chrapicki (1496-1508) should be regarded as the purchaser of the Bible. He made a present of it to the Franciscan monastery, he had founded in 1502, in Lubawa the then bishop’s residence. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1821, the Bible was handed over to the Library of the Priests’ Seminary in Pelplin in 1833. None, however, guessed its Gutenberg provenance. It was Dr. Paul Schwenke, the director of the University Library in Knigsberg, who in 1897, on the basis of scientific investigations into the origins of typography, established its genuineness as a 42 lines Bible. Its exceptionally high material value endangered its remaining in Poland in 1927-1929. In the extensive chapter III the writer tells about the endeavours of not only the most famous foreign libraries and antiquaries, but also of various rich collectors to purchase it. The intended selling caused vivid polemics in the papers and a general opposition of the public opinion. Thanks to these and especially to the firm intervention of the Bibliophiles’ Associations in Poland the selling of the Bible has been thwarted. The Bible was again put to danger after the outbreak of World War II. In order to protect it from being robbed by the Nazis the author brought it to Warsaw in August 1939, where it found shelter in the underground treasury of the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego. Despite hectic searches and intense questionings the Gestapo did not succeed in either tracing the Bible, or catch ing the writer pursued as „the Bible thief”. From Warsaw the Bible was brought by the Bank directors to Paris. After wards, under dramatic circumstances described by Prof. Karol Estreicher, it Saga Pelplmskiej Biblii Gutenberga ļ 87 was evacuated together with the Wawel treasures to England. From there, after a short stay, the Bible, the Wawel treasures and a part of England’s gold were sent in the Polish ship „Batory”, escorted by British men-of-war, to Canada which, for the time of war, granted a safe shelter to the treasures. After the war Canadian goverment in view of the changed political situ ation and under the influence of the machinations of the Polish goverment in exile, in spite of the former pledge, refused to return the treasures to the Polish People’s Republic. Even interventions in the U.N. Assembly had no positive results. The whole affair was given the enormous publicity of an international and cultural scandal. Only after 13 years of intense and manifold efforts, backed by numer ous scientific and cultural institutes, among others also by Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński, the Primate of Poland, the imprisoned treasures, and among them the Bible, came back to Poland on the 3rd February 1959. They were made accessible to the public during expositions in the Na tional Museum in Warsaw and afterwards in Wawel, arousing vivid interest and widespread joy because of their having returned home. The Bible, after having undergone the most indispensable preservation treatment, was brought to Pelplin. Here, placed in a safe with a glazed inner door, it remains exposed awaiting thousands of tourists who each year arrive to Pelplin in order to admire this most precious monument of printing art.
