Spells. The vocabulary of casting spells comprehends the terms epoide, literally a "singing over", and pharmakon, a broad designation that straddles the notions of incantation and drug (medicine or poison, possibly enchanted) and which could be extended to describe any psychagogic force: Plato in particular assimilated the power of the spellbinding word to the power of poetry or rhetoric, both of which deprive their objects of the capacity for autonomous action (Charmides, 157a; Republic, 607d; Meno, 80a; df. Gorgias, Encomium of Helen):
