Професія: художник Summary The book Profession: Artist is a story about Serhiy Yakutovych’s life and art. It is hard to describe it in several formulas: the artist’s path ran through different epochs, social changes and numerous artistic ideas. And Yakutovych himself proved to be a deep thinker reflecting on the essence of many situations and paying a close heed to the world around him. His artwork became the mirror of the society and events he witnessed. Serhiy Yakutovych was born on November 21,1952 into the family of famous Kyiv atrists, Heorhiy Yakutovych and Oleksandra Pavlovska. Since the early childhood, the boy was brought up in a creative atmosphere, his parents often invited the most interesting people in the city: directors, writers, painters, sculptors. So, already as a child, Serhiy got the understanding of the art environment in Ukraine: strong censorship, fearful officialdom, opportunistic majority of artists and a small number of innovative events. At the same time, Yakutovych’s childhood concurred with the prosperity of the dissident movement that gave many people hope for the possibility to have an alternative point of view. A creative team was formed around Serhiy already at the art school - a landmark place in Kyiv’s art life where most future painters came from. In the 1960s, the school gathered those who would later become the founders of the Kyiv hyperrealism: Serhiy Bazyliev, Serhiy Heta, Serhiy Sherstiuk, Les Podervianskyi and Serhiy Chepyk. A new view on art was born in this circle that Yakutovych was a part of. The artists were inspired by
Antonioni’s, Tarkovsky’s and Fellini’s films, Borges’ and Cortázar’s books, learned the world art by the small number of albums and magazines with reproductions that they could get hold of in the USSR. 184
Summary Yakutovych at first entered the institute in Moscow where he had studied for two years and opened a lot of perspectives for himself. Moscow in general was the place at the time that artists were very much interested in: more liberal than the provinces, with wider opportunities and constant flow of new people. For instance, painters were most often sent to exhibitions abroad from Moscow - it was much harder to get permission in Kyiv. Serhiy’s friends from Kyiv also studied or later lived in the Russian capital. They even named themselves - the Generation of Kyiv Railway Station. This definition stemmed from their constant motion: the artists moved from one city to another, searched for something and strived for a continuous development. As Yakutovych himself described it, such dynamics was possible owing to their “provincial” origin ֊ under these circumstances a person always seeks to “break loose” and achieve something bigger. Perhaps, that is why when Kyiv became a full-blown national capital, this potential of many painters started “fading away.” Although most Yakutovych’s friends emigrated from Kyiv, Serhiy himself returned to it in 1973, entered the Kyiv Art Institute and worked in his native city further on almost all his life. Isolation from the like-minded created a certain discomfort inside, but it was not that appreciable until the 1990s. First of all, Yakutovych was very popular and presented his artwork at different exhibitions. There were a lot of orders and collaborations with book publishers, many expocentres took Serhiy’s works to their collections
without even looking at them. At that time, the artist was mainly involved in book and easel graphic art and was highly successful in these fields 185
Професія: художник - Yakutovych was seen, on the one hand, as a “dynasty artist” and, on the other hand, as a “living classic.” He was engaged in his biggest searches, experiments and researches of “political graphic art,” non-figurative images and historical and mythic topics during the 70s and 80s. However, even being generally acclaimed, the painter was very critical about the system and expressed it in both his works and texts and essays that he wrote in those days. The absence of an adequate vector for future, stuffiness of similar “social realistic” themes, problems with the communication network among artists ֊ all this concerned Yakutovych and made him, not without reason, anxious about his own future works. Will they be needed later on, how will the context of the social “stagnancy” of the 1980s affect them? Serhiy’s anxiety was justified: since the late 1980s, the cultural and political life in Ukraine changed dramatically. New trends appeared where works with the “Soviet” marker were crossed out of the context regardless of their quality, and topical art was limited to a narrow circle of individuals. All this happened amid the economic devastation making it impossible for most people to enjoy adequate living conditions, as well as the decay of museums and other art institutions - that is the situation when creative impulses were pushed to the background and were not a person’s urgent need. The Yakutovych were not immune to this crisis either. Publishing houses were closed and did not order anything anymore, state museums did not operate and private centres were
restricted by a small circle of young artists and paid no attention to others. Serhiy felt “unfit” and artistically abandoned. At this time, he continued soul-searching and looking for “his theme” that he could pour himself into and develop. He managed to find one on the cusp of the 1990s and 2000s. It was the first time that the artist tried his hand 186
Summary at the film production as an art director on the set of Yuriy Illienko’s Prayer for Hetman Mazepa. In addition to updating his technique and form, Yakutovych found in cinema the subject matter he had been already leaning towards before ֊ the history of Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa and Cossacks in general. Serhiy plunged into studying this country’s epoch and became a real myth-maker of the great powerness of independent Ukraine. The Cossacks-related images and symbols crated by Yakutovych were the strongest ones among those developed for the last decade. Moreover, the artist touched on the visuality of Mykolą Hohol (one of his favourite writers), went on working in cinema and ventured into theatre. Serhiy Yakutovych died on June 27, 2017, and his grand-scale creative search and its results have not been studied yet. The book Profession: Artist is the first thorough biography of the most complex and least famous artist of the 1970s to 2000s. The edition consists of seven sections: Approaching, Hyperrealism, Political Graphic Art, Transformations, Unfit, Generation of Kyiv Railway Station and New System, as well as the afterword. Together they compose both a mirror of the unhighlighted epoch in the history of Ukrainian art and the portrait of one of the most important artists for its formation Serhiy Yakutovych. 187
