Vi ste luc sveta
God calls every man, regardless his class or nationality, to sanctity. What is sanctity that is demanded of us by our Saviour
Jesus Christ was clearly and unambiguously conveyed to us by the apostles in the Gospels and their letters. Sanctity lies in
the diligent and thorough keeping to our everyday duties in the spirit of Jesus’ commandment: »You shall love the lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself« (Luke 10.27).
In our efforts on the path to sanctity the Church sets for us several examples in the form of exceptional people who
confirmed their loyalty to Christ in an environment hostile to faith by offering their lives (martyrs) or who stood out to such
an extent in their realisation of Christ’s commandment of love towards God and your neighbour that their environment
recognised in their life and actions God’s special work. If they parted with this world in the odour of sanctity, as is said, this
perception of the odour of sanctity of God’s servant remained alive among the believers to such an extent that people felt
that God shares His mercy (from a human’s point of view) more amply at the intercession of a certain servant of God, the
responsible representatives of the Church initiate the formal procedure for his/her beatification.
Naturally, saints are not »made« in Rome. Saints grow and reach maturity for sanctity in the environment where they live and
work. Their environment has to mature with them and recognise the sanctity of the person, so that people start recommending
themselves to a certain servant of God in the hope that God would, to his or her intercession, hear our prayers and, if this is
God’s will, also perform a miracle necessary for the Church to declare a servant of God Blessed or a Saint.
The book »Vi ste luc sveta« (You are the Light of the World) (Mt 5.14) presents thirteen saints who are connected to the
Slovenian territory or Slovenian ancestors in a special way in the past as missionaries, martyrs, or as witnesses to the Gospel
of Christ, while all of them are, each in his own way, benefactors of our ancestors. Some of them were declared saints by
the faith of the people and confirmed by the local chancellor (Domitianus, Victorinus of Poetovio, Maximilian of Lorch,
Maxim of Emona, Monald of Koper, Liharda of Kamen,Just of Trieste, Servulus) or were from the 12th century onwards
(since the rule of Pope Alexander III 1159-1181) after the official procedure in Rome declared saints by the Pope so that,
just as we pray at mass on All Saints Day, a vast multitude of our holy brothers and sisters would obtain for us God’s
abundant mercy.
The Saints are followed by biographies of seven blessed people who were by birth from the Slovenian territory. So far,
the Church has declared the following people Blessed: Lavant Bishop Anton Martin Slomsek as a confessor (Maribor
1999) and martyrs Francesco G. Bonifacio (Trieste 2008), Lojze Grozde (Celje 2010), and sisters Krizina Bojanc and
Antonija Fabjan (Sarajevo 2011).
The last part of the book is devoted to thirteen servants of God for whom the procedure for beatification is still open, for
some of them on the level of diocese, for others in front of the responsible congregation in Rome. Besides the diligent
work and persistence of the postulator, the success of these procedures also depends greatly on us, our belief that God
can, through His servants to whom we turn, hear our ardent prayers and on our persistence so that we, like the widow
in the Gospel of Luke (18.2), do not give up on our prayers and supplications.
