The Ecumenism in Upper Silesia from Lutheran Perspective Summary In 2017 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the dialogue between Lutherans and Roman Catholics. The Commission established by the Lutheran World Federation and Vatican worked out several documents, the most important being the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification signed on August 31, 1999 in Augsburg. Another important document that calls for „ecumenism as the imperative of a Christian conscience” is Ut unum sint, an encyclical by Pope John Paul II of 1995. The condition of the ecumeny in a diocese and in region depends mainly on the attitude of the diocesan superiors. Ecumenical relations in the Upper Silesia after 1945 were not easy. At present in the Upper Silesia there can be observed the increasing sincerity, openness and trust between diocesan superiors, clergymen and the believers. In the Roman Catholic Church in Upper Silesia the importance of this process of openness and ecumenical cooperation has been strongly emphasized in the resolution of the First Synod of the Diocese of Katowice. The final document contains a comprehensive study: Ecumenism in the Katowice Church, which very positively surprises with the ecumenical vision of the future and positive calls, however some of them have not be fully realized up today. At the beginning of 21st century we cans observe a decline of the prayerful zeal for Christian unity. The ecumenical relations have changed, the mentioned anxiety, uncertainty and distrust disappeared. Today inviting clergymen and believers from other churches to the parish feast is an accepted custom. In 2017 Lutheran and Roman Catholic Christians commemorate the beginning of the Reformation 300 years ago. It is time now to consider the new ways of the development of ecumeny in Silesia. Since the time of impressing breakthrough has finished, the present basis of normality should be used. The Silesia has all the reasons to not quench the awaken spirit of ecumeny and to not forget its achievements, but in their power to shape a new, better reality. Adam Palion Relations between Churches and Ecumenism - Roman-Catholic Perspective Summary The article discusses the changes which had place in Roman-Catholic Church after 1945, especially after the Second Vatican Council, in the aspect of ecumenism. Several documents on ecumenism have been presented, starting with the Council’s document, the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, then the Directory as the executive tool of the Council resolutions and the 251 Summaries encyclical of John Paul II on ecumenism: Ut unum sint, ending with the two synod documents (1975 and 2016) of the local church - the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Katowice. Adam Malina The Reception of Martin Luther’s Hymns in Polish Lutheran Song Books in Upper Silesia in 19th and 20th Centuries Summary The hymnodic work of Martin Luther (1483-1546) has become one of characteristic elements of Lutheran spirituality. Skilfully combining liturgical and pedagogical topics „Father of Reformation” created a universal tool in service of the Church. His output found a prominent place in hymn books, first German, than later translated into Polish, also in Upper Silesia. 19th century and the first half of 20th century were a period of lush development of hymn books, created in and for Silesia. Luther’s hymns were an important part of these books and the way in which they were presented reflected the attitude towards the Reformer. One of the most characteristic ways of mentioned presentation was putting collection of Luther’s hymns as a first section of a hymn book. This- method waned during the 19th century, giving place to scattering of Luther’s hymns among other pieces in particular sections of the hymn book. The reception of Luther’s hymns as coming from different linguistic area points toward a need of constant updating of translations in order to enable them to have an inspiring influence on contemporary Church life. Aleksandra Maciejczyk The Cultural Heritage of Reformation in Silesia after 1945 - Upper Silesian Choral Composers and Conductors Summary Article raises the issue of choral music’s significance in Lutheran confessionality in Silesia, focusing on movement leading musicians. Amongst a lot of Lutheran music schools graduates, performing in Upper Silesia after 1945, it goes deeper into figures of three musicians - Jan Gawlas, Adam Hiawiczka, Miroslaw Bliwert. They combined in their artistic pursuit the three elements key to parish everyday life - conductorship, composition and organ playing, giving their talent in order to serve the Church, paying great attention to music and church hymn as an element of Lutheran identity. They were also the subsequent conductors of Largo Cantabile choir of Katowice’s Lutheran parish, which recorded two albums to honour such great choirmasters. The albums are an attempt to grasp in a musical form both early Lutheran chorale 252 Cultural Heritage of the Reformation in Silesia after 1945 heritage, as well as contemporary pieces of Polish Lutheran hymnists including works of musicians being a subject of this report. Ewa Chojecka Ways of Restoring Historical Memory: Forest Churches and The Fons Pastoralis in the Bielsko Zion Summary The article deals with two subject matters: the almost forgotten, recently rediscovered forest churches, hidden in the Beskidy mountains, a relic of the period of counterreformation, and the monument to distinguished pastors of previous centuries erected 1934. on the so-called Bielsko Zion. The names of the pastors engraved on the monument were hacked-away after 1945 within the framework of ,,de-Germanisation”. The restoration of the inscriptions and their original message was recently completed (2016). Both topics as special landmarks of history are being analysed by means of the scholarly method known as „history of second degree” which concerns phenomena of memory and commemoration. Jan Szturc Memorials of Eminent Lutherans in Cities of Upper Silesia Summary The Lutheran community is more historically rooted in the Upper Silesia than in other regions of Poland, however even here Lutherans constitute a minority. Their perception is also influenced by complicated national relations, as Silesia was under German rule for several centuries. Nevertheless, in spite of confessional prejudices intertwined historically with national ones, the community gave birth to a relatively big number of people who have made great contributions not only to the region but also to the country and in a broader sense to the world’s culture and science. This is evidenced by monuments, memorial plaques or street names that can be found in the public space in the Katowice conurbation. The article consists of the compilation of such memorials which can be found in the area. They point by name to certain figures, usually even without mentioning their confession, but the very fact of commemorating them, often not without controversies in the local media, is an important indicator of the role that Lutheran community played and still plays here. The relics from the times before the incorporation of Upper Silesia into Poland suffered a large damage, however especially after 1989 Lutherans who rendered the greatest service in the history of this region have been finally commemorated. 253 Summaries Olaf Bertman Lutheran Cemetery in Katowice as an Example of Lutheran Sepulchral Art Summary The article is dedicated to a Lutheran cemetery located near Francuska Street in Katowice. The cemetery created in the last 20 years of 19th century and still functioning till today is one of the most important historical objects in Katowice, as well as a place of memory for Lutherans living in the area. The article contains descriptions of the most important tombstones, the architectural plan of the object and a sketch of its past against the history of the city. Aneta Sokol Lutheran Poetry and Prose in Silesia after 1989 Summary In the article on Lutheran literature in Silesia after 1989, the author presents poetry, novel and short stories. The author points to the most expressive publishing phenomena, which allowed Polish Lutheran writers to reach their readers with new books; among them especially interesting is the popularity of novels by Lidia Czyz. The Lutheran poetry and prose, developed over the past 25 years, has been shown as a form of preserving the confessional tradition and personal religiousness, as well as the image of diaspora. Renata Dampc-Jarosz From the Bielsko Zion. About the Poetry of Bishop Pawel Anweiler Summary The paper is an attempt to analyze the determinants of the poetic world of Rev. Bishop Pawel Anweiler, the head of the Tesin Diocese of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland in years 1992-2015. The analysis was based on the philosophy of dialogue and drama of Rev. J. Tischner, on the concept of meeting the other and the possibility of opening up to the world. In the poetry of Bishop Pawel Anweiler this meeting corresponds with the record of existence in time and place, based on the belief in the omnipresence of God and the permanence of faith which, despite the variability of places and against various socio-historical events, remains intact. 254 Cultural Heritage of the Reformation in Silesia after 1945 Michal Jakubski The Identity of Contemporary Lutherans from the Cieszyn Silesia in Interviews of Grazyna Kubica Summary The article discusses the identity of the Lutheran community in the Cieszyn Silesia. Respondents of the interviews conducted by Grazyna Kubica were people born in Cieszyn Silesia, representatives of the migrant population from other regions of Poland and - using another perspective - people declaring their confessional. Grazyna Barbara Szewczyk Lutheran Upper Silesia in the Memoirs of Rev. Rudolf Baron Summary Typescript memoirs of Lutheran clergyman, Rev. Rudolf Baron (1921-2003) cover the years of his childhood and youth spent in Golasowice and Pszczyna, period of the World War II, postwar fortunes, including forty years of pastoral work in German parishes in the north of Germany. The whole was written in years 2001-2003. The story about the past intertwines with the present experiences, family stories - with historical events. The attention of the author is drawn by the outer world, however observed from a distance - as a place where he looks for important for Lutheran community facts. The subject of his examination is on the one hand prewar Lutheran Church in Golasowice, on the other hand - its postwar history. Writing about the Lutheran identity and its determinants, as well as about national conflicts and individual tragedies, Rev. Rudolf Baron recalls pieces of his own biography, documents and oral testimonies of witnesses. He also emphasizes the role of the upbringing in a deeply religious Lutheran family and the landscapes of his childhood, which influenced strongly his life. Jadwiga Badura Upper Silesia in the Pages of „Zwiastun Ewangelicki” Summary The article presents subject of Upper Silesian Lutheranism in „Zwiastun Ewangelicki” covering the period after 1989 i.e. after the political transformation. The magazine has over 150 years of history. It is also the only church-wide periodical issued by Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland. In its pages there have been published historical content, showing among 255 Summaries other things Upper Silesian Lutherans contribution into the culture, as well as informational one, registering the most important events in the parishes of the Diocese of Katowice, one of the six dioceses of the Church. Wislawa Bertman Cultural and Social Topics in Lutheran Press in Upper Silesia after 1989 Summary The article presents Lutheran periodicals published after 1989 in the Upper Silesia (Katowice, Pszczyna). They have been considered as a part of a bigger phenomenon, which was the rapid development of Lutheran press after the political transformation of 1989. The presentation takes into regard the social and cultural topics which were discussed in press, including typical for the Lutheran culture issues, such as social thought, work ethics, education and music. The particularly accented issues that appeared in the Lutheran press of that period were: searching for the Lutheran identity in history of the confession, attempts to restore the common memory of the community, as well as the active participation of Lutherans in political, social and cultural life of new Poland. Michal Skop The „Silesian Emerald” Award in Katowice Press Summary The article is an attempt to look at the press releases published in the local newspapers on the occasion of handing the „Silesian Emerald” award to outstanding representatives of Silesia for their special achievements in the field of ecumenism, tolerance, reconciliation between nations and European integration. In the years 2004-2016 the Award Committee honored twenty-six people from the world of politics, administration, business, science, culture, music and art - scientists and researchers, writers, editors, columnists and athletes, as well as clergymen. Information on the ceremony of handing the „Silesian Emerald” can be found mainly in local, regional press: daily newspapers - „DziennikZachodni” and „Gazeta Wyborcza” (Katowice edition); the weekly newspaper - „Gosc Niedzielny” and the monthly magazine - „Sl^sk”. The authors of the analyzed texts usually indicated on ecumenical and non-denominational character of the award; they also referred to the holiday (Reformation Day) celebrated on the day of the ceremony and to the anniversary of the signing of the Catholic - Lutheran Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. 256 Cultural Heritage of the Reformation in Silesia after 194.5 Miroslawa Czarnecka The Reformation and Education of Girls on the Example of Silesia Summary In the interdisciplinary studies on the volume and significance of Reformation’s achievements in all spheres of religious, social and cultural life there can be observed nowadays a relativisation of its heritage. The controversies involve confessional phenomena, a power discourse, gender relations, as well as changes within public spaces and communication. Unquestionable, however remain the Luther’s accomplishments in the field of education as the Reformer, being ahead of his time, noticed the need to start a process of creating institutional forms of education for girls. The religious tensions in Silesia in 16th and 17th century caused by Reformation and Counter-Reformation and especially Thirty Years’ War making great damage in the region, negatively affected the development of education, particularly institutional education for girls. The reason for this was, on the one hand the secularisation of female convents, which since the beginning had been the exclusive centres of alphabétisation and education for girlsand on the other - traditional, normative gender model, which in both Protestantism and Catholicism used to exclude girls from higher forms of school education. Kalina Mroz-Jablecka Lutheran Concept of Girls’ Upbringing in Silesian Funeral Sermons of the 17th and 18th Centuries Summary The image of gender relations, a division of gender roles in family and society, as well as the influence of Martin Luther’s teachings on upbringing girls as a future wives and mothers is a popular topic of early modern texts such as polemical treatises. An especially valuable medium are protestant funeral sermons spreading in Germany in 17th and 18th century which included life sketches of the deceased ones from which it is possible to reconstruct the everyday life of women of that time. The analysis of life sketches of women coming from Wroclaw’s burgher elite represented by scholars, clergymen, counsellors, merchants and craftsmen shows the role of woman not only confined to closed space of a household. Common for all representatives of elites is a catalogue of virtues such as piety, prudence or thriftiness. The life sketches show an idealized image of an impeccable maiden, husband supporting and faithful wife, a mother striving to give her children a Christian upbringing and finally an experienced matriarch responsible for a family business and active in the social field. A sign of the Lutheran concept of girls’ upbringing not only reserved for clergy families is an everyday Bible reading, learning Psalms by heart, and regular participation in Church service. In Silesian protestant 257 Summaries funeral sermons there are included information concerning girls’ education, carefully focused on the profession of father and future husband according to the position occupied by them in the social hierarchy. Aleksandra Trybus-Cieslar Lutheran Education in Silesia after 1989 on the Example of Schools of the Lutheran Society in Cieszyn Summary The Lutheran care about education has a long tradition in Cieszyn Silesia. It was expressed in founding parish schools by the churches in the region, as well as creating Lutheran Gymnasium in Cieszyn (1810), which educated a large number of activists who rendered a great service for a national life in Silesia. Tradition of Lutheran education was cultivated by Lutheran Society for Community Education and Lutheran Society in Cieszyn. After 1989 the education practice was continued by reactivated Lutheran Society (TE), which in 1993 opened the Lutheran Society High School in Cieszyn (LOTE), and in the consecutive years established a secondary school (GTE) in 1999, primary school (SPTE) in 2005 as well as Kindergarten (PTE) in 2006. Lutheran Society Schools are highly appreciated in the local community. They cultivate Lutheran work ethic, tolerance and ecumenism. The Lutheran Society High School (LOTE) is largely popular in the region and among its graduates there are pastors, teachers, medical doctors and lawyers. Lutheran Society Schools offer wide educational possibilities and they achieve high positions in the school rankings. Maria Czudek Lutheran Education in Gliwice after 1989 Summary The Lutheran parish in Gliwice has always been vigorously engaged in education. The early mention of the Lutheran school dates back to the late 18th century. Before World War II there were total of four Lutheran schools in Gliwice. These traditions underwent a revival after the transformation of 1989. Lutherans in Gliwice have set up the Lutheran Educational Society (ETE) whose aim iseducation activity. At present, ETE runs three schools: primary school, junior high school and senior high school. These Christian schoolsare firmly embedded in biblical values, whose pillars are the knowledge, skills and character of the student. The patron of the school is Albert Schweitzer, whose work of life was rooted in love for God is a good example for students in choosing life priorities. 258 Cultural Heritage of the Reformation in Silesia after 1945 Tadeusz Chmiel The Lutheran Radio Programme „Gios Zycia” and its Role in the Culture Summary The paper discusses the history of Lutheran radio programme „Glos Zycia” (“Voice of Life”), created by Rev. Bishop Tadeusz Szurman and broadcasted in Polish Radio Katowice since 1995 (the first broadcasting took place on 22 January 1995)- There have been presented the cultural role of the programme - in the context of the basis of theory of culture - and its influence to listeners. The author indicates the possibilities of preserving and using the recorded materials by publishing them in the form of books and audiobooks, to preserve the work of the editorial team. There have been also reported statistical data on the listenership of PR Katowice, especially the religious programmes, including „Glos Zycia”. In the last part of the article there was shown the missionary role of the programme, as well as the circle of people engaged in its recording, among them a big number of co-workers from Cieszyn Diocese, and there was emphasized the extent of its reception by the listeners from Cieszyn and Zaolzie. 259
